I have four or five weeks holiday booked starting last week in August so was thinking about a trip down the Romantic Road and then over to the Italian Lakes. Has anyone got any experience of doing this trip is it doable in the time I have assuming I don’t want to be driving huge distances every day. Are the lakes quietish that time of year ?

We were there in September and only turned away from one site on lake Garda but there was another half a mile down the road, just not ACSI so slightly more expensive.

We did as far south as Siena but in 7 weeks.

Yours should be doable with tuning.

Verona is a lovely city.

Ferrari & Lamborghini factories at Modena also great!!!

Enjoy

Thanks for this , from your response if we just do the Romantic Road in about 7-10 days then just stick to the Northern Lakes and not venture too far South we should be able to do it in the time I have.Good tip about Verona - it’s on the list .

Personally in the time you have I would give the Romantic road a swerve. The only bit of it that I found worth seeing was the last bit in Bavaria around Fussen and the lake there. I have done the Italian Lakes in August and it will be extremely busy and sites will be at a premium. Aires are cramped and expensive. You may need to book ahead for some of the hot spots and be prepared to pay top prices. We have a scooter so I found aires and places within ten miles of places like Lake Garda. Iseo we couldnt even find space on any of the Aires / Sostas (There are not many). There is a good Sosta at Cannobio on Maggiore and one to consider not far from there is Lake Orta which is a bit of a hidden gem and a bit more low key than the likes of Garda. If it gets too much the Italian Dolomite's are worth exploring.

I wrote this blog in 2012 which is mainly the Dolomites but also some of the lakes around August time. Its a fantastic place.

What’s this romantic road, Germany?

What’s this romantic road, Germany?

Its basically a 400km road from Wurzburg to Fussen. There are a few interesting towns and villages along it but nothing IMO worth making a detour for. Its stunning about 10-15 miles before you get to Fussen though. We stopped on a free Sosta near there at a village called Pieting a couple of years ago outside a really lovely open air swimming pool. Room for about four or five vans. I think we were on our own.

I took some video out on the scooter.

Never ever done the tour as I heard it wasn't that great. I often think these things are best appreciated from a distance surrounded by the countryside and mountains.

Scenery, lakes and mountains are my thing really.
Yes, agreed Barry, Just advising the OP of the better of the two, If the OP likes "culture" then there is Oberammergau as well

Lake iseo is the hidden jewel most visiting como and Garda ...it is the lake the Italians visit, there is a railway that runs at the side of the lake for relaxed sightseeing, there are many food outlets specialising in food from the area the main larder being the lake itself not taking anything away fro Lagos como and Garda they are beautiful too

Still doing the research and taking the advice on here I will focus on the last bit of the romantic road and head off to Lake Garda and aim to arrive there 1st week in Sept when I hope it would be a bit quieter and slightly easier to find space . At 4.5t I’m guessing that I will have to get a Go Box to pass through Austria or is there an easy non toll route that anyone could recommend.

Your 1st week is likely to be manic as all of August is mainland Europe holiday time and then when you go over into September, quite amazingly quite a lot of the commercial sites will start to close from mid month onwards however all Aires will still be open

Not sure that you can avoid a go box at over 3500kg.....But if under 3500kg this route avoids Austrian M-Ways and Europabrucke
It may work for you..I simply set my TomTom to "No Tolls" as I did with Google to get this !
I include Gschnitz as it is delightful for 1 or 2 nights !
