Motorhome vehicle lengths on ferries

Brittany Ferries slapped my mate at Plymouth as he booked as 5m but was 5.6m , extra £30 each way from memory, still on same crossing. I can understand if the ferry is rammed and space is critical, but other times it’s money for old rope.

They often measure anything bigger than a car on Orkney Ferries (the inter isles ferries in Orkney).

As we live on one of the northern isles we use them often and I smile at one of the pursors (who must be a proper jobsworth) when I seem him measuring the hauliers lorry. This lorry travels back on forth on the ferry every day, sometimes twice a day - does he think it may have changed size?

That's good to know. We live at Stenness and have recently bought a smaller m/h with the intentions of spending some time Island Hopping. Will have to get the tape measure out!

Just under measures! They hardly ever check,
if you can go on a quite crossing then all the loaders want is you on the boat, they don’t care what size you are!
Even if they catch you out you’ve only got to pay what you should have paid anyway!
Hi Darcar where in East Devon are you? I am in Exeter with a mercedes 709d pic looks like a merc.
Suppose I have to include tow bar in length

Was wondering whether to put a spare wheel on the back. Just under 6 m but a wheel would take us over. So now we decide travel with spare wheel or a filler!
Take it off n put it in the van for the ferry journey put it back on when you arrive at first pitch up , also means you've the opportunity to grease the mountings !

If you're planning on doing a few islands it may be worth buying a multi-journey ticket (I think it's a book actually) as 10 journeys are at 25% reduction and 20 journeys at 30% reduction. Keep in mind that these are singles so five islands equal 10 journeys.

We’re in Beer about 25 miles from Exeter. On the coast half way between Sidmouth and Lyme Regis.
I’v had a couple of 709’s and before that we had a 508. Always been a Mercedes Benz van man! This one is our 814 vario 2004.
Darcar.

Hi Darcar I was looking for a wheel alignment place near exeter do you know of any and do you know roof bars rack that will fit 709d many thanks mick

My van is 6.0m but I have a back box on so I declare it at 6.5m, I have checked both prices and it is exactly the same for P&O Dover to Calais, I book through the C&CC on the phone usualy the day before

Last three trips from Portsmouth BF have measured every MH, glad mine was length declared, but apparently that is unusual!
