Hi all, I have an 08 Adria Twin, Fiat Ducato van conversion with double rear doors....the bike rack on the back is a Fiamma but its impossible for me to lift the bike onto it on my own....I’ve had a look at Fiamma and I don’t think they do a lower fitting one, maybe other makes do so I will check....Van has a towbar so would that be a suitable option? Are towbar based bikeracks ok safety wise??? ???

I watched JohnsCross fitting a lateral bar designed to accept a removable tow ball for exactly that purpose.

When the installation would have been completed it will be barely noticeable. I liked what I saw whilst underway. From memory it was less than £500, but please don't quote me.

Problem with many towbar racks is opening the doors on your van but just saw one that hinges off to the side to allow this on a dutch van

Our bikerack fits on a bracket that is mounted behind the towball. It swivels down to thw floor when we want to open the boot. It was a hanging type but I converted it with a couple of roofbar type rails that the bikes fit on. I don't know how old the original was but the MH is over 20 years old.

I saw one a couple of weeks ago. Similar to the one above. Although it had a triangular, stress support going up to the left hand door. It hinged on uprated hinges using the holes where the bump stops were and on the left door. Very sturdy. Hate to think how much it cost. From memory, either French or from Belgium. Cracking bit of kit. Had two leccy bikes on it.

This is what I am using at the mo but like it’s been said you can’t open the back doors764FED45-1E3E-4B88-943C-575DEFF471C0.jpeg63F5B32A-60AD-4BEC-A803-FC58BEB50F26.jpeg

We've bought this for our new van: https://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel4_tab.php/all-products/atera_strada_dl_3_to_4_bike_carrier_uk_lights_no_ar2603/Qx@w,6M4PHS,ZGenkQvENtdosM Haven't tried it yet in real life as the van isn't finished but I've seen it in the workshop and it looks good.
The tow ball needs to be mounted on the bottom holes and that way at least one of the rear doors should open fully.

Here's a video:

That's the one I've got on my Ducato PVC. Great bit of kit.
Had to add a 20mm spacer between towbar bracket and towball in order for both rear doors to open.

@korky. The guy on the video had a spacer fitted. The converter working on ours is fitting a spacer just to give a bit extra clearance.

I looked at these at the NEC in February. Great solid piece of kit that will carry 2 electric bikes, and allow both rear doors to open fully to allow gas bottle change over, access to toilet cassette, etc. No need for tow bar. Only setback is that the total price fitted is about £1500.
After months of studying the alternatives I am going to splash out and buy one

There are door mounted fold down racks which make bike loading easier ( for me at 82 !) but you need a lightin board and 13 pin socket.

I have a towbar mounted one, cheap as chips, think you saw it on my VW. Used it on my Ibiza quite a bit, it's for two bikes but we've had 3 on it a few times and it never fell off. However, you have to take it off to open the back doors, and I haven't used it since I got told off for not having a lighting board with number plate, as it obscured it.

We have had this one on our peugeot boxer for 2 years. Very good quality. It pulls back allowing the back doors to open up most of the way with the bikes still on. We can get to the gas cupboard without removing them, which was the main issue, as it is just inside the back door.
