It's a good service
I signed up a while back and then didn't give it another thought... until the email duly dropped in my inbox. Really handy because it reminded me to sort it out a bit earlier this year, in time for the Netherlands trip.

If you let your MOT (or tax) expire does it cause extra problems or expense? Is it any more expensive to renew or are you not allowed to drive to a testing station? I’m in Australia and will store mine (in the UK) over winter. Just wondering what happens if I didn’t get back to the UK before it expired. I suppose if MOT expires then the tax is due you can’t pay the tax, as I presume you need a current MOT for tax?

As long as the motis booked, you can drive the vehicle to it for a test.

A simple phone call to a MOT center book an MOT and make sure your insurance is up to date and your good to go.

It will have to be sorned if it has no tax or insurance or you will be fined anyway whether you are using it or not, AFAIK you do not have to sorn for no MOT but as long as it is kept off the road I would sorn it before you leave it for the Winter

Yes, I was planning to sorn it (nice to have that option). I was more concerned with what would happen if I didn’t get back before the MOT expired. Seems fairly simple, so nothing to worry about. MOT runs out in Feb, when I won’t be in the UK. So I either renew it in Sep before I leave or let it expire and renew it when I come back. Ta.
