Those damnable ROAD CLOSED signs put up by service companies !!

I don't know about you, but as far as I can see the number of ROAD CLOSED signs goes up by the day throughout the country!!

For seemingly no reason at all, the various service companies can put up these darned ROAD CLOSED signs without any consideration for the mayhem it causes. Only yesterday I was driving back from Suffolk to Lincolnshire, faithfully following the sat-nav and our journey was interrupted on several occasions by ROAD CLOSED signs! I don’t know how many additional miles or time it added to our journey but it was very considerable and bloody annoying.

And then when we eventually got onto the A1 there they were again, several signs informing drivers that this major road was going to be closed overnight at several locations the result of which will bring absolute mayhem to all the surrounding roads.

Better get used to it. British road network is worn out. To repair/ replace it requires labour who must be protected.
At work, when I get back to it, involves using the A1 ,M1, M6, all have night time closures. Annoying I agree, especially when you’ve got a double decker trailer. Then you’ve got the extra difficulty of finding a route without bridges under 16ft.

The government were warned by industry that the nations roads were due to fail by 2000 if major work wasn’t undertaken so they have done better than expected. The problem is most work being done is on the surface and the sub stratas are badly damaged. It can only get worse unfortunately

I work many a times in these road closed zones , they are there for safety but you will be surprised how many people ignore the signs and drive through them, the biggest problem is when I slow down and put my beacons on to turn into the works access opening I always get 2 or 3 cars following me , I then have to drive all the way through the road works and back round just to let these idiots out of the enclosure . Highways England have now started using cameras and prosecuting these drivers

My original post wasn't actually targeted at highways people doing the desperately needed road repairs but at companies such as Power Gen, Open Reach and such similar companies who now can throw up these darned signs closing whole rural roads when a few years ago they managed with a traffic light system.
I am sorry to say @jeffmossy but having experienced this type of supposed closure so many times and then only to discover there is absolutely no reason why the road is closed, it is no wonder why so many people ignore the signs. Only yesterday, a very law abiding friend of mine who actually sits on the bench as a JP said, he always ignores these signs as 90% of the time (rural Suffolk) although the signs suggest the road is closed, it isn't !!

Oh and by the way Highways are an organisation who have to cover their costs, if I ever received a ticket from them I would fight my side in court!

Here the co have to get a court order to close a rd and a given time is set,half closures with lights are ok and no requirement to get c/order.
Fines issued here to if caught speeding on marked rds with cons or speed sines.

@Millie Master Things have changed since the simple temp traffic light system and safety is very strict now , also roads can be closed because of subsidence or dangerous surfaces etc. etc , so even though you cannot see anyone working it could be a issue with the road itself

I don't like them any more than the next person but it's still better than arriving home to find your internet/toilet/electricity/water closed.

What annoys me is that Road Ahead Closed sometimes means the road I am on and sometimes it means a side road off it. How am I supposed to know if it affects my route?

It's not only the UK! Followed Campercontact to a site in Spain last February . . . had to turn round after a 15 km drive along narrow country back-roads.?

Too bloody true, oh so very often the total dick heads who put up these infernal signs don't have the intelligence to even consider all the lives of those people their inept actions are inconveniencing!

And it gets worse when TWO traffic management companies intermingle with each others signage . A bit of communication would go a long way and save a lot of frustration
