Currently (4 years til retirement) working at University as a Technician, within the Technical Resources office of the Health and Wellbeing department, providing / maintaining / purchasing equipment for student teaching / learning.
Prior to this I spent 23yrs in the armed forces, a few years working as a sports instructor / therapist and 8 years as a qualified electrician working in a building firm. My previous experience of sports knowledge and electrical know how got me my current job where we maintain working manikins that can be programmed to emulate clinical conditions in order that the students studying health related and nursing / midwifery can safely practice their skills.

DVSA is the new VOSA
Truckers worst nightmare
When I have spoken to DVLA I have found them pretty helpful generally.
Had occasion to contact DVSA once and I have to say the person I spoke to was the most unhelpful person I have ever had to deal with from any government agency. I guess there is always at least one in any organisation and I was the unlucky one to get him.

workshop manager 2 years till retirement just bought new van getting ready for retiring and hit with illness awaiting results of various scans
and hope for the best signed off unable to work

rab
such a shame RAb.......it happens to many of us unfortunately........know the feeling........lets hope scans give some good results........keep yer pecker up......take care and good luck.

Presently I'm full time looking after the boy, but was a hgv tramper for a lot of years before this, & previous to that a heavy plant operator. Probably going to go back to plant in the not too distant future hopefully....

I know many of you are retired, but for those unfortunate people who still have to work what's your job ?
I'm currently a HGV Driver soon to semi retire
Ex electro-mechanical engineer, now a business owner and cheese maker. Got 12 years to go to retire (if they don’t move the goalpost) but hoping to reduce the workload to enable more downtime/camper time

maintenance engineer in a food factory for 19 years,
Just sold our camper, now looking for our forever one.
But apparently I am extremely hard to please???
Looking for our first serious camper but like you I need certain attributes and the final result is a little elusive at the mo, waiting for a payout which will help ?

Still working for the NHS as a senior estates officer. Was hoping for redundancy but got promoted instead just turned 60 so cant see me getting out any time soon.

Retired 2 years ago at 50. Was a teacher/lecturer in Business Studies for the last 10 years prior to retirement. In wholesaling for 20 years before that.

I was an architect, international specialist in design and project management of large general and teaching hospitals and laboratories. A less than perfect spinal operation followed later by prostate cancer put paid to that. However once the scans and treatments and suchlike were all over it all proved a blessing in disguise, it kickstarted me down another path where other things seemed more important and worth getting on with whilst I still could. So followed 14 years sailing a hundred year old Dutch barge round the flat parts of Western Europe, and now by way of contrast, 6 years into a tour of all the mountain ranges we can find in Europe. So Rab, there is life after the scary medical stuff, I hope it proves so for you too. There’s a lot of truth in that saying ‘tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life’. It doesn’t really matter how important or valuable you may think what you did may have been, or what you do now. If there’s stuff you still want to do, or an itch you’ve got to scratch...just plan to get on with it tomorrow while you can, despite the crap you may have to get through today!...Inshallah!

It's not a prison sentence you know, you can leave if there's something else you want to do.

Feels like sometime. but do take the van out most weekends even winter and can wander around Europe at the moment for a month a year. Think 6 months site work would suit me with my engineering background and 6 months wandering Europe in the future would work for me.

Ex car / commercial vehicle Auto Electrician, ex railway Commercial Guard, Ticket Office Clerk, taken ill health severance, stress+++, 63 and they think I have a Mental Health condition, but only since I was 3, not an illness!! Just moved home so going to be very busy with that and hope to use the MH a lot more:). Also busy with Home Brew :) :), 3 years to State pension. Fortunately my health, apart from above is good, not so for the Co-Pilot who is having a few issues at the moment, like you, lots of scans and test, she has an issue that has been going on for about 10 years, now they have found something, don't know yet where we go with that but at long last something has been found, so that good, hopefully. Good luck with your results, try to think positive.(y)(y)(y)
