Whaley Bridge dam collapse

I hope everyone stays safe, it looks daunting for everyone in the area.
Hopefully the Navigation stays safe but only time will tell.

Scary sh1t. I wonder how on earth it hasn't completely failed though, with that much damage.

I'd not want to live under a dam. Even driving past the lake at chew magna scares me - you are below the water level.

We were below ground in the states, in an aquarium, when a small earthquake struck. I moved, er, rather quickly!

Hope it gets sorted and dam is made safe, hope everyone has evacuated..... would hate for disaster to happen.

Hopefully there won't be any lives lost this time. Just worrying that if the dam does burst, how quickly will homes get sorted,

Shame water is so powerful and can do so much damage as long as nobody gets hurt dams and houses can be fixed. The concrete in that photo looks really thin and old

cant believe it.....some folk have refused to evacuate.......oh my, i would be out of there in a shot......

The problem is that our dams here in the Peak District ( and I suppose most others) were built by the Victorians nearly 200 years ago and are mainly composed of earth and stones and clad with pretty looking pieces of masonry. They start off many metres thick and taper until they just a couple at the top. very little investment has been made other than plugging the odd leak, so this was bound to happen, and as long as we keep building on flood plains it is going to get worse. Our town, amongst other, was badly flooded a few years ago, so they improved our flood defences. How? By scraping out the river and brook and lining then with stone setts, so now the water flows rapidly straight through and on to the next poor souls down stream. I agree that things have in recent years got more difficult, but in many cases we are the creators of our misfortune as far as the flooding goes

Seen it on the news ,looks very bad and the workmanship is very shoddy to say the least.
Building home on flood planes is total madness in my books, thank goodness i live on high ground.
Hope all folk safe and somewhere to shack up for a few nights.

Must have been a friday afternoon dam, they didn`t finish the top corner before knocking off.

Just as a thought, the dam, although it's there to feed the Peak Forest canal, it's also part of the river Goyt, which together with the Etherow, which starts here in Glossop (just behind the council tip) meet up in Stockport to create the Mersey. So there may be many more problems should the dam burst and hit those posh folks on the Cheshire plain

It cant have been built that badly as its still standing after that length of time! It will have been built with a safety margin , and thats what is holding it at the moment . You have to wonder what experts have been looking at it , and with what experience ? How many new dams have we built in UK lately ? Since Fish got the weather wrong everything is very cautious. If there is that much urgency in reinforcing it , have we only got one Chinook .
