Mechanic Labour Costs

So the Water Pump on old Sylvia (Talbot Express) was failing, the one for the engine that is.
I do not have the space sadly to do mechanical engine work like this myself. The mechanic who did it charged me £42.50 + VAT as an hourly labour rate. What are other people's experiences of hourly mechanic's labour rates please ?
Thanks
Robert

That seems to be very reasonable compared to some bigger garages and main agents that are around the £100 per hour.
But then it depends how many hours he charged you for.

He charged me for 5 hours but said the job took most of the day as rusted in....
Total cost inc new coolant fluid and VAT was £270
Thanks

Depends on his premises tools equipment and experience. Better a guy with the good gear and 30 years experience charging that than some garage charging £25 an hour and taking twice as long on job. I use a Glasgow company for servicing and repairs on my works vans just looked at an invoice and it was £45+ vat per hour wouldn’t go past them tried others who looked cheaper ended up going back.

He is experienced and has a small'ish garage with a couple of lifts. So all in all I am probably getting value for money then. Thanks
