Hi everyone!

My name's Donna, I'm in me 30s and live up North (Tyne and Wear to be exact) .

My hubby and I are considering getting our first motorhome and I am toying with the idea of taking my C1 licence, so that when we're shopping around, we're not as restricted on makes and models and have a better option for payloads by up-plating. I will probably be doing most of the driving. Hubby has the C1 entitlement as he passed before '97.

My question is regarding the theory aspect of the C1 test. I bought a DVSA book to help revise for the theory and it all seems to be based around HGVs. As far as I can tell there isn't a theory for small and medium goods vehicles up to 7.5t so most of the stuff I will have to learn is for bigger trucks that I will never drive. I purely want to take the test for motorhome purposes.

Is it an all-in-one test does anyone know? Or when I come to book my theory (hopefully after passing the relevent medical) will there be a separate theory for smaller goods vehicles?, or do I have to learn all the stuff about brake lines and what speed is it on a dual carriageway if I'm driving a trailer which has 38t MAM etc etc

I have actually asked this of the DVSA and DVLA and couldn't get a straight answer out of either of them.

I'm hoping someone on here has experience of taking their C1 and what the theory entails .

Thanks in advance and sorry for the newbie question.

Donna

Hi and welcome sorry I can’t help but someone will come along and tell you what you want to know

I answered this question when you asked it on OAL (Motorhome Matters) a week ago and you did not return to the thread. I know you are new to motorhome forums but the best thing to do is to reply, otherwise you might not get as much help with future requests for help.

You can go on intensive training course over a few days with "guaranteed" pass.
Not cheap but by the end you will have C1 or for a little extra full HGV if you fancy a bit of freelance driving 😀
You will have to do theory and hazard perception tests as well as having a medical.

Looking like they`ve done it again

Don't forget that you will need to keep the bloody medicals going to keep the licence with an acquired (ie test gained) proficiency.
Pity that SOMEBODY doesn't realise that a motorhome is not a REAL LORRY, even coach driver cannot drive a Coach based RV. Same chassis.
It is all down to vested interests again. I wonder why if a motorhome is definitely a lorry, why cannot a person take a test in it?

No, they will not allow that, it has to be specified as a box body of a certain dimension. Similar to a trailer test for B1E must be a commercial box van and not a caravan which is what is needed for most people. Bureaucrats made the requirement in Brussels.

I stand corrected - and whilst a pvc might meet the closed box rules (to avoid tests in pick ups) if it was MAM >4T and has ABD the real killer is must have a tachograph.
Roll on Brexit so we can amend back to anything we fancy!
I suppose that I ought to point out that all vehicle and other driving licence changes were consulted on in this country and subject to agreement by countries across Europe.
Of course if we didn't want pur drivers to be able to drive freely across Europe we could probably have refused to adopt them?

Of course, what you forgot to add was that the UK votes on these sort of issues when they are proposed and they are also involved in negotiations before they are adopted. The UK voted Yes to laws passed at EU level 95% of the time. Abstained 3% and lost 2% since 1999.
So, you can’t blame EU bureaucrats if the UK government supported those laws.
Surprising eh?

You must realise that we have had no control over anything for 40+ years and that faceless unelected bureaucrats have imposed every single regulation on us regardless of our views or whether we initiated it 😀😀
If you want proof just think about the ice packed kipper that Boris waved at us all.
You must not let the facts get in the way of a good reason for Brexit I'm afraid.
