Where, out of all the places you've visited, would you choose to live... And why ?

As I live in South Tynedale, just south of the Roman Wall (Hadrian's wall) I would choose to live right here. We often think that we are lucky to visit such fantastic places in our van and that a small few are as good as where we live.
Pros:
Great views
Quiet roads
No flooding or tsunamis
No earthquakes or volcanoes
No crowds
No wars, or civil disturbance
Good access to public services, NHS etc.
Near to but not in Scotland, Lake District, Yorkshire

Cons:
🤔

It's the journey we love in our van not necessarily the destination. Always a joy to get home.

Lucky us
K ;)

Although we got the travelling bug over 30 years ago ( VW Camper) we bought our first new motorhome when we retired a few years ago with the intention of travelling round France looking for a house to buy.
We found a house pretty quickly and moved here ( Central Brittany) permenantly 2 years ago.
We still travel a lot but we love it here and if we had to give the van up, would be quite happy staying here and sharing the garden with a few goats, chickens and a horse or two.

That is a good question and one that no doubt we will all have to face at some point in our lives.

As for me/us, well I/we hope to be using 'Millie' for many years yet, but having said that we are a couple who have always moved house a lot, for instance since returning to live in the UK in 2014 we are living in our third house since our return and that one has just gone on the market and all 3 of them were in some ways the most idyllic, however, with the exception of the 1st one in remotest Wales, they simply haven't ticked all our must have boxes.

As for the one in Wales, it was a gorgeous timber framed barn conversion that had a very large garden (2 acres), no neighbours and totally uninterrupted views to the Kerry Ridgeway some 4 miles away. We would be still there now if it hadn't been for all 14 named storms of the 15/16 winter being southerlies that caused the entire triple glazed 2 story gable end to flex and the Welsh slate roof to flutter which proved to be a tad unnerving!!

Where are we hoping to move to next, gaud knows because after over 4 years of searching nothing has come up which ticks all our must have boxes.

We have found our best place in Suffolk. Close enough to sea and beautiful beaches, lovely market town with all independent shops. Gorgeous countryside. Reasonable transport links and a friendly community.
Would ideally do half and half with Portugal but as we age, think too much land and we won't mention Brexit!!

I love the AONB of Shropshire partly because it's beautiful, and partly because my ancestors farmed on top of the Kerry Ridgeway about 250 years ago. Failing that, Suffolk or north Northumberland.
.

You can still travel without a motorhome, we used to go all over renting cottages before we got ours, before that trailer tent, caravan or tent. If you cant drive you can still get trains/coaches so no need not to travel unless you no longer want to

Especially if you have a bus pass!

Manly, suberb of Sydney, Aystralia. We have just spent two months there with our daughter and her family.
Pros
  • Easy access to the Blue Mountains and the coast north and south of Sydney, although a bit grim at the moment due to the fires.
  • Outdoor lifestyle, beaches, snorkeling, national parks, walking.
  • The weather
  • Excellent public services, health care, transport (buses and ferries to Sydney)
  • Culture and entertainment in Sydney.
  • Manly is a bit of a tourist destination, but individuals and families not big tour groups, so it has a happy atmosphere. When you see people in their swimwear in the equivalent of Sainsburys it cheers you up.
  • Variety of good cafes and restaurants.
Cons
  • Australia is a long way from anywhere. The advantage of England is the easy access to the variety of the UK, Europe and North Africa.
  • Property in Manly is very expensive but there are alternatives in the Northern Beaches area not far away.
The ideal would be to split the year between Australia, home in the UK and travelling but it looks like daughter and family may be relocating back to the UK this year.

No you wouldn't!

I have just received the April Newsletter from Motorhoming France and it tells us all that everything is closed including all of the Aires etc. etc. until at least the 15th April.
Another interesting (pull your hair out) snippet of information is with regards to the Tour de France........... no the organisers haven't as yet cancelled the 2020 event but are considering running it, but not allowing any spectators!!!
Tour de France No No No..
Too many riders and support staff and tv etc
Where do they stay...Hotels closed.
I like "Le Tour" mais pas maintenant !!!
NOT THIS YEAR !!! ...Buffoons if they go ahead !;

The Continentals need to watch Telly when they're cooped up.
The Tv networks need something to fill in the gaps between the adverts.
Why not rerun previous years tours ? Just change the names on the commentary.
I'm sure nobody would notice.
We're really missing the van now..
We could use it to store our toilet roll collection and the freezer for our pea mountain.

The guys will be struggling to do enough training and with no racing in their legs it would be a struggle, even more than usual, and it would not be the spectacle it should be. I cannot see it being run, even later in the year. Poor Froomey frustrated again and G may never get his second win either :(
Best cancel this year, all things considered.
K :(

It's a bit like the Olympics, that massive event would patently have been suicide to allow to go ahead and likewise the Tour (which I love), it simply wouldn't be the Tour if it didn't have the spectators, the whole event is one enormous and fantastic mind boggling event, but it has to be cancelled.

Aye you can put off a once-in-4-years event for a year but you couldnt have two TDF's next year... could you 🤔

I didn’t mean right now, during this epidemic; after it’s all back to normal

September to May. Portugal, or until it got too hot.
June, July, August, rural France.
In hope, more than expectation. Freedom to travel into Europe could be very different after January 2021.
Like everyone else, this virus has queered all my Euro plans for, what could be our last year of Euro freedom.

After reading through the above for spelling mistakes, it could be taken as depressive. No. Not at all. Perhaps I should have put the word “HOPE” in capitals.
Stay safe.
Edit. No mention of Northampton. Now, that would be depressive . I’ll be there by Tuesday. So looking forward to that,🤬
Seeing Nic again, being the only exception
