Working from Motorhome

Hi everyone,

My question is about motorhomes but also about accounting. Hope someone can help me :)
I'm about to buy a motorhome and will be working remotely from there. I would like to know, as a owner of an IT consultancy limited company, I can use my business to pay for the motorhome. Eg: buy it as a business asset, or rent from my self as a business office, or anything else that covers the cost of the motorhome
PS: I'm a UK resident, the business is also registered in the UK, but the motorhome is from a European country.

Thanks ;)

Boris might be looking for work soon.
He appears to know most of the rules.

I thought he relied on others telling him the rules...

You cannot do as you are hoping for.

You can claim expenses for mileage travelled, campsite costs and a few other minor things but that is all.

I'm a freelance toilet attendant and cleaning operative. Can I buy my motorhome on the business on the basis that I have to empty the toilet cassette and wash the bathroom and kitchen area when we're on a trip? Asking for a tax avoider ...

You might be able to claim more but it would come with repercussions which might well outweigh the benefits

I'm not an accountant, but I used to run my own knowledge-based business from home until I retired. That said, my words come with no guarantees:
To be able to claim for business use of space within a home (which I suspect includes a mobile one), you need to be able to either have a dedicated space (e.g. a room) used only for business or else be able to apportion area and time (so, for example, if you used a quarter of the area for 40 hours a week, you could claim for 40 / (4 * 24 * 7) of the ongoing cost) however, that's likely to be a lot more trouble than it's worth. Your Ltd Co. could own the moho and provide it both for your personal and business use, in which case all expenses (including fuel, insurance, maintenance, etc.) would be deductible against business tax. However, personal tax on the benefit in kind might well outweigh any fiscal saving you might make -- and the insurance problem mentioned below is likely to be worse.
Another thing to bear in mind is that it's very difficult to get motorhome insurance that covers business use, which will be needed if you use your motorhome as an office. This isn't an issue if your vehicle is registered as a commercial. For example, I converted a panel van to an office that I could use at client sites and I found a few that were prepared to insure the van for "business use, own goods" -- but they all asked whether it was a motorhome rather than a van and I got the feeling they would have declined insurance if it was.

You can claim part of the household bills for the use of part of your home as an office, might be a stretch but if you lived in the van full time it might apply to that but I'd talk to your accountant, I used to do it for my transport business, I also claimed a subsistence allowance for when I was to far from home to return to eat, receipts are paramount for any claim of course.

If you travel to one place of work (commuting) then standard Insurance terms apply. If you need to travel to multiple work sites then you must have Business insurance. It matters not whether you are an employee or a business owner if you are using your own vehicle, whatever that vehicle type may be.
FWIW, the insurances for both my motorhome (Adrian Flux) and my car (Hastings Direct) do not cover commuting. Some insurers cover it as standard; some don't, so it's worth checking. However, as a limited company contractor, whatever business travel you do might not be classed as commuting.
Anyway, here's a link to confused.com on types of insurance...

Ref the comments on insurance for business and the use of motorhomes, people should confirm the cover is appropriate for themselves, but the standard policy from Comfort for Motorhomes includes full business use (at least it did when I took out cover in May 2020 and think that is still the case).

You don't say what size the company is, but knowing what allowances we claim for based on one vehicle and home office, I don't see it being worthwhile unless buying new and offsetting the VAT.

Never not had commuting insurance comes as standard on a social domestic and leisure policy, use for business has always been extra.

Can’t see why you can’t purchase a Motorhome and have it as a company vehicle, fairlysyre that bit is okay but check with an accountant

A call to HMRC might be productive too, but you need to get the right person for a positive answer, they're a bit like DVLA if they are not sure they resort to saying no you can't.
