Motorhome European breakdown cover recommendations

We are travelling to Spain via France later this year. Our UK cover is with Green Flag Mayday but they have no European option. Can anyone recommend European cover that includes get you home if necessary? I know some insurance companies offer cover but we are with Adrian Flux who have no breakdown option but we don't want to change insurance just to get breakdown cover.

We arranged AA European Cover in November 21 before we had to cancel our trip to France/Spain. £125.79pa for existing AA Membership [so thick end of £300 for UK & European Cover]. We didn't opt for the cost of Parts cover. Should include vehicle recovery 'if economically viable' or cost of 1 person returning to Europe to collect the repaired vehicle if the repairs can't be made immediately.

As I found out when I had a heart attack in Spain in Jan 2020, that's when you discover EXACTLY what the cover provides and how many hoops you need to jump through ... That involved Travel Insurance, but the Underwriters advice to return to UK to submit Claims paperwork, 'and we'll then tell you whether you WERE covered on the return trip [back to UK] ... That's just about verbatim, hence my cyncism about the reach of the cover when you really need it

Ours is through the Nationwide Flex account and has personal cover for if you’re in another vehicle and travel insurance for £13 a month account fees. As of now we have not used it but I think some folk on here have.

Cheers

We sort of used it - it seemed fine.

What actually happened was that we were in Spain for Christmas and New Year a few years ago. Between the two, we were moving from one campsite to another. We stopped at the supermarket on our way out of the town where we had spent Christmas, but when we left, the van wouldn’t go above 20mph. We were supposed to be travelling a couple of hours south on the motorway, no way could we continue, so we limped back to the site we had just left and fortunately they were able to book us back in. We phoned the Nationwide and they arranged for a mechanic - however he wasn’t going to be able to come out for about 5 days, because of it being Christmas, a weekend, and New Year. That was what we expected anyway, so no criticism of the service.

However, the next morning, husband pointed at a little button on the dash. “What’s this one for?” he asked. I explained it was “a bit like the cruise control only instead of maintaining your speed, it sets it at a certain speed and doesn’t let you go any faster …. YOU HAVEN’T TOUCHED IT HAVE YOU !!!!!”

So, he managed to ‘fix’ the problem and we cancelled the mechanic. But I’m sure he would have been very good if he had been needed 🤬🤬🤬

The type of action that invites the 'No more entries will be accepted for the 'Wally of the Week Award' reply. I have several such awards, and the slightly more prestigious 'One More Brain Cell and You Could Have Been a Plant' Statuette, standing proudly over the fireplace ...

Take a good look at the small print t&c's particularly limitations of length and weight of your van...

That is why I'm looking specifically for motorhome cover. The best option so far is to rejoin CAMC and then buy Red Pennant cover which I know is about the best cover available. That will cost £264 total.

We got full AA Cover with Safeguard, had a number of claims, over the 20 years of 60% overseas and 40% UK full-timing. Great people.
The AA were magnificent. We were on first name terms with the French claims handlers.
Most of the claims were due to outside forces, warranty failures and things like punctures.
We averaged the costs at about £430 to 480 per year, depending on slight loss of NCB

This was with green flag but is changing to AA from 1/3/22 I think.
Been good when we’ve needed to use it.

Yes, we used it when our clutch threw a wobbly in Croatia. Excellent service, quick and efficient, no quibbling, even kept ringing us to ensure everything was going well to our satisfaction.

Remember the AA dont cover over 3.5 ton, AIB cover me for about £75

If its through an insurer they do: we are with Safeguard and are 5t and they came out no problems when we had a blow out.

If you are a member of CCC have a look at RAC Arrival available only to members.
You can build your own level of cover. We use it all the time, for the motorhome and the car. It’s whichever vehicle the member is driving.

I respectfully suggest that you get vehicles which are more reliable ;).

I worked out the cost and it was more expensive than CAMC with red pennant. With RAC we would still have to add health insurance which would have cost nearly £200 more. Red Pennant is all inclusive. We also found there are more CLs than CS's which we use far more than main sites, even though we mainly wild camp.
