it's happening again tonight but our sky is really cloudy so far.

Geomagnetic Disturbance Alert

27th February 2023

British Geological Survey

Last night (26th Feb) the northern lights were seen across much of the UK due to a geomagnetic storm. The storm is continuing and may intensify later today, so further displays of aurora are possible tonight.
Assuming clear dark skies, there is an increased chance of seeing the aurora tonight (27th Feb). Those in Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland have the best chance if the weather is favourable.

Shame that, it's not often GB gets to see them at all but so far south is unheard of, we were clouded over all night when I looked out at wee o clock.

Lovely, I'd have stayed up all night if I'd seen that.

It was barely visible to my eye, just a smudge of pink. As soon as I held my phone up to the sky I could see it much better on the screen. Further north it must have been spectacular.

Edit. We have a dark sky policy in the village which makes looking at the night sky much easier.

There was a pic posted showing northern lights over Stonehenge but you definitely couldn’t see them here. Not only couldn’t you see them but the pic on the net was taking facing South lol

You'd need bloody good glasses to see them at the south pole.

Just looked at the Stonehenge Aurora pictures on the net and compared them with a 360 degree tour of Stonehenge. It looks to me that the picture were facing North or perhaps Northeast. What makes you say they were facing South?

I am sat there, got compass on the phone and that says it’s approx 340 degrees North when I face with same view

South would bev180 so 340 is only 20 off north

Yes I checked because they said it was likely again last night and North was behind me. We thought it was a bit suspect as two of us were outside with the dogs while the guy who takes them was there. Mind, he managed to get a photo of a rainbow ending in the stones one day when it was actually way to the left in the field. Artistic license is fine but should say when filters or photoshop is used

Some people like pretend things are how they want them.

We call em Prats up here.

If North was behind you, you were facing South away from the Aurora. Last night the significant activity was at about 9pm and on Sunday nearer 10pm. It needs an exceptional peak in activity to be seen in the South and these peaks are rare and short lasting.

I just looked out and it's still cloudy here.

Had three pretty clear nights here but of course accompanied by heavy frost, was warmer up North lol

I hope it's not an increasing trend as a strong EMP would really bugger things up for us nowadays.
