I've often thought of doing that and have certainly seen others do it. Perfectly legal and maybe seeing others using roads fully might wake up some drivers?
 
I do. It regularly especially at the roundabout at junction 25 of the m62 where the traffic can. Be all the way back to the motorway
 
I saw a new-to-me manoeuvre today (8am, Norwich).

Travelling westwards round the outer ring road I approached traffic lights which changed to red, allowing N-S traffic to flow. A large grey van, which had just overtaken me, swung into the LH lane, where there is an uncontrolled left filter. It then went "straight across" the two N-S lanes which had no traffic, into the uncontrolled left filter of the northbound carriage and continued on its way westwards.

People do this along winterstoke road in Bristol.

Used to p1ss me off no end as I was travelling the other way and our traffic having to stop for these entitled cnuts often added around 10 minutes to my journey. The traffic backed up all around the roads before it for miles. After the roundabout, free flowing.

Are they better drivers because they are very aware of traffic flow and take an opportunity which is perfectly legal as opposed to being "entitled cnuts" as you put it. You are just as entitled to use that tactic, had you spotted it.

You missed the part about their selfish antics directly affecting many people coming the other way.

Perfectly legal? I doubt it, that lane is labelled as right turn, they are effectively going straight on. A loop of the roundabout doesn't change their intended, and eventual, direction.

But, if you want to be that guy that doesn't think about the consequences to anyone else just to save yourself a few minutes, you carry on. Just don't try and kid us you're doing anything else.

Of course it's legal, if it's a right turn lane and you turn right to negotiate the roundabout, the intended eventual direction has nothing to do with it. As for consequences, there are none. Selfish, not in the least, it'd called reading the road and being aware. If others want to sit waiting in the left lane well that's a matter for them.

You really aren't listening. As you are going around the roundabout, people entering it from other directions have to stop and give way to you. INCLUDING the people going in the same direction as you. If you weren't taking this short cut they would have continued without being obstructed by you. In the one example I used to experience coming home from work it caused huge tailbacks.

I see your point, but I'd still do it as my journey is just as important as anyone else's.
 
I think the response is "inconsiderate" yes, particularly if traffic is heavy on the other legs of the roundabout, illegal .... definitely not.

I know it can be seen as annoying but often the extra lane filtering down to one is there to increase capacity on the network, the problem is that people don't filter in sensibly i.e. one from each lane, perhaps we should do away with the dual lane and go back to single carriageways and longer queues 🤔🤔
 
Exactly you couldn't do this unless there was a lane to go around too or you would be blocking the roundabout.

This is a very different situation. There is a point very near to me that has a short 3rd lane added to the normally 2 lane ring road as it crosses a set of traffic lights. It works very well, 3 lanes fill with traffic when the lights are red and then easily merge into gaps after the lights because everyone naturally takes off at different speeds.

In the cases we're talking about, the lanes are there to go in a different direction. I'll ask you the same question:

If it were a right turn lane going to traffic lights would you drive down it and cut in at the end?
 
No I'd not cut in unless, but that's a different scenario I think from your description.

If it is legal there is no argument there, disappointment yes but no one did anything wrong IMHO, also I and I'm sure many others in a strange town have been caught wrong footed approaching a roundabout and in the outside lane but wanting to turn left, sat navs will do that too you if your attention is distracted, so you could cut the traffic to your left, but much easier to just go all the way round and turn off, same manoeuvre, different reason.

And therein lies the problem, no I wouldn't cut in as described at traffic lights, I'd turn right and turn around at the earliest opportunity, or change lane if the traffic was light and the manouevre didn't cause a problem. However, in a busy situation, the traffic light manouevre you describe could well be deemed to be "driving without due care and attention". The police would say that you should have continued to turn right. At a roundabout, the worst you would get is a warning as the police would find it impossible to prove that you hadn't made a mistake and by going around the roundabout you had corrected it with no danger to ither toad users.
