london low emisson cash cow

This is something that really gets my goat! The TfL website says that Abbey Wood is outside the ULEZ but inside the LEZ. I've just checked my mate's van (2002 Transit-based Auto-Sleepers Ravenna, <3,500kg) on the TfL website and it's £12.50/day for him to enter the ULEZ but there's no charge for the LEZ. For my van (3,850kg), the charge for both the LEZ and the ULEZ is £300/day -- i.e. the same as Geoffrey Eaton was charged, and a quick search suggests that his Laika Ecovip is 3,850kg MAM.

Since there's no charge for most motorhomes to enter the LEZ (and get to Abbey Wood), it would be an easy mistake to make if you didn't understand the gotcha for those of us with heavier vans.

dunno how the CAZ works in Bradford but on both of the main roads going from Shipley to Bradford there seems to be about the normal amount of artics going in, not checked what the cost is but they are not all local trucks so somebody is paying for them.

hi guys . IF you can do what we do stay well away from these places . that's why we have 2/ 3months abroad . Cheyanne

What annoys me is I have registered the van locally so I can enter up to 12 times a year, but it is a private vehicle, not a commercial vehicle, I object to having to predict how many times I may need to pass that way, and it should not just be registered on a local database but a national one so I can pass through any CAZ or LEZ without charge.

These are not national schemes so unlikely to get joined up administration.

I know, but there should be a national database for each town to send vehicle data to so the system works better for private vehicles, it's just a big mess with zero coordination.

I got caught out by two on the same day recently Bradford, then Sheffield. I had no idea they had CAZ's until approaching them and as I was circumnavigating them both on ring roads I was surprised and disgusted that the ring roads themselves were inside the CAZ! I would have expected to enter a CAZ as I left the ringroad heading into town but not to be in the CAZ whilst avoiding the centre...
When you are not familiar with the area and in busy traffic you don't get much of a chance to re-route. Imagine if I had stopped to consult a map... its a shame they don't put up diversion signs on the main routes to avoid the CAZ...
Now I know...

K :(

I know that the Newcastle/Gateshead "clean air zone" finally came into force in January this year. I last drove our camper through it in October last year, and checked again yesterday. I'm ok for the moment, but for how long? ☹️

I just checked and it shows my van exempt until June this year?

Edit: sorry, July this year

Wonder how many Clean Air Zones permit Woodburning Stoves and Office Air Conditioning systems, both of which produce more pollution than ICEs

The problem there is that these shyte holes are turning the country into a maze. I prefer to not use motorways unless I have time constraints -- much prefer scenic routes, but strategic placement of these shyte holes means that sometimes the motorway has become the only way. When they first talked about "clean air cash cows zones", there was an implied undertaking that motorways and bypasses would not be included, yet Bradford has mendaciously set the boundary on the outer edge of the ring road rather than just up to the ring road, effectively forcing me to take the A1M to go South from Harrogate instead of my preferred route via the Peak District :(
Then there's the issue of access to major transport hubs where the hub itself or a major access route is inside the shyte hole, making it difficult to get to and from those hubs. Examples are Heathrow and Bristol airports (as the guy subject of post #16 found out!)

We are to blame I suppose, we wanted the convenience of shopping all in one place, so they built town centres, we shopped there, then there were too many of us wanting to shop and it got too busy, too crowded, nowhere to a park because there were fewer cars when they built them, so they knocked down some old building and built car parks and malls with MS car parks and we went en masse to those, then they put rent and rates up so the big outfits bought land in the middle of nowhere and built superstores with huge carparks so we all went there and the towns filled up with coffee shops and restaurants and the people want to sit outside and enjoy life without being run over or breathing in car exhaust fumes, so they pedestrianised some parts, then they decided they didn't want any cars at all in the towns so they put in one way systems, and put up signage so strangers got lost, and now they want us to pay to go to what few shops are left, and they want delivery companies to pay to deliver to the shops, so soon there will be no shops at all.

If we want change then we need to go to the MPs, give them a hard time, Liz and I write to them quite often, not much changes but we're just two people, what is needed is a bloody revolution and give them a good kick up the arse and tell them what we want, and what we have is not it.

hi guys . as you probably might know we don't tour much in the UK & never go near any cities in Europe we bypass them on the m/ways as we have a toll tag then back on the D or national roads . for us its the A1---M11-----M25---M20 then the tunnel yippee  . SADiq khan can shove london where the sun don't shine with his cash cow cheyenne
