Back in the 1950's London transport bus chassis were tested on the road and the driver only had a windscreen to protect him from the elements.It goes to show how soft our haulage drivers have become when they can basically do the job sitting on the chassis.
Something else that needs changing is the way that service vehicles don't have regular MOTs -- the services concerned being deemed competent to maintain their vehicles in roadworthy condition. The issue then is that when they're sold on their first MOT (and hence public mileage record) is when in the hands of whoever buys them at auction and there's evidence that a lot are 'clocked' between purchase at auction and sale to the public. YouTuber "Geoff Buys Cars" did a few vids on this...I am currently in discussions with the the DVLA fraud prevention team and the guys that suppprt the DVLA API that provides some of the backend info that ANPR uses, trying to close the loop hole where the dishonest dishonourable VED evaders abuse an ex service vehicle’s previous VED exemption status.
Amazingly certain fields on the V5 such as body type and taxation class were originally deemed personal info so could not be made available on the public domain.
Well in part due to the way vehicles need to be identified by ANPR in the ever growing congestion zones this is going to have to change.
Wouldn’t it be handy if one day you could check the taxation class and body type online especially for vans with an M1 vehicle type classification where ved can be eye wateringly expensive before buying a van, right now you can’t but hopefully that will be changing soon
