london low emisson cash cow

It's just a local tax on the poor mostly, I'm okay the car is exempt and so is the van here, it just pisses me off that I may catch a fine when we go away at some point, don't we already pay enough already, stupidly high tax on fuel (£3,80 a gallon in the US) road tax (car is zero) insu rance tax, income tax, VA fecking T.
No income tax no vat.trotters.jpg

I thought I'd see if there was sat nag to avoid the CAZ and found this.

So I thought, oh good leste test it.

This is the lovely shaped Bradford CAZ

And this is How Google maps thinks we should navigate it.

So that's working well then, NOT.

BUT did you tell it that you wanted to avoid the zone? Merely searching to find it is probably not sufficient!

I was impressed to discover that WAZE offers avoidance schemes for LEZ all over the world!!!! I haven't tried it yet as I'm too busy posting on social media sites .

Gordon
(Go to settings then select "Tolls and HOV": change the green + sign to a red x)

Not sure how to Gordon on Google maps, I don't see a setting for CAZ.

I thought we'd done this to death?! The problems found (IIRC) were:
  1. that one or both ends of the trip are in the CAZ and so it's pointless (impossible) to avoid it; or
  2. there is no alternative that doesn't involve a massive additional distance.
FWIW, I'm using CoPilot and that didn't find a route to avoid the Bradford travesty either...

Yes Geoff, it is a real pain in the bottom, but I am not meaning that, this has been going on a long time now so there should be more being done to help people find their way around this atrocity, and that is where I'm trying to get to, why isn't it being done?

ISTM that a major obstacle to route planning (both automatic and by hand) is that the Bradford CAZ breaks the 'rules' for these zones. When they were first announced, there was a promise that no zone would include the outermost ring road or bypass. However, the outer boundary of Bradford's has (mendaciously IMO) been set at the outer edge of (and so includes) the ring road. Also, just like Bath, there is no viable way round unless you go many miles out of your way...

You only have to look at the sizes to see Bradford is taking the piss.

But in reality is there anything that can be done to make it fair, I don't object to the CAZ per se, but the size and location is a bar to easy travel around it for anyone foolish enough to want to come here in anything but a private car. I have always said ANY private vehicle should be excempt and listed so with DVLA with respect to all the CAZs.

There's no excuse for any of the CAZs as the air quality in UK is universally good with low pollution; so it's all about cash grabs and forcing people out of their cars. The exceptions aren't road-transport related. For example, the worst pollution in London is in the Underground -- and that's all because the Underground is filthy and the muck gets resuspended each time a tube train passes. Right now, the only monitoring station that's reporting something other than "Low" is London't Ealing Horn Lane, where the PM10 level is "Moderate" -- but that sensor is right outside of a cement factory, so it doesn't take a genius to figure out what's causing the particulates! Anyway, for reference, the Air Quality England website is at: https://airqualityengland.co.uk/

I think I might just chuck some of this info at my local MP if I can manage to cobble together a proper-sounding letter, Liz talks to him every few days as he pops in for a sandwich at her sons shop, He's a conservative but actually a good man who is very much pro Keighley and has done a lot for us including keeping the new hospital build on track.

Google maps isn't Waze! If you tell Waze what zones you're hit by or exempt from it will do its best (courtesy of my fellow Volunteer editors) to avoid as appropriate. You can also add passes for tolls/tunnels etc.
One relevant thing that Waze (and many others) doesn't have is advice about road widths/height restrictions. That's (currently) a conscious decision by the powers that be, largely to avoid litigation from people sent down roads they don't fit. There's still the requirement to look out of the windscreen and observe signs!
