I start radiotherapy on Thursday and my scooter will be living in the back of the car at night, which are getting colder, my last one I'd 4th December so I'm wondering if this will harm the battery, I do have a spare, but there needs to be 9ne installed for it to fold.

in 'storage' - no probs. wouldn't charge it in the cold but apart from that, no worries

Thanks David, I figured I'd just swap the batteries each day as I have a spare one already and just top it up every day for 30 minutes or so, I charge them in a unheated conservatory.

Maybe if it gets very cold, charge in a warmer room if you can?
 
Yes, I can do that easily, I just have been doing it in the conservatory because I sometimes do it overnight but I don't need to really..

that just made me think what do people do in winter for their vans? I know the Lipo ones are a bit more fancy compared to my scooter batteries of course.

Our Lithium is installed under a sofa just behind the passenger seat. A heating duct passes through the storarge box, and we set the heating to 13 degrees overnight when 'in residence' [also protects the semi-winterised fresh water tank]. If the M/Home is not in use, the water tank is drained and the BMS stops charging until the cabin temperature gets up to a minimum of 5 degrees Celsius

I didn't say they were Merlin, I was referring to MoHo batteries, This is mine.

There has been a few casses of garden sheds bursting into flames with bike battery charging over here, many charge them in hallways of flats etc. :eek:
 
Ok, so it could easily be the sort (lipo or lmc or other know simply as lithium ion) that can go into thermal runaway if something goes wrong, the result is an intense fire. The chances are rare BUT the consequences could easily be disastrous or fatal if you can't get out of the house quickly. The only lithium type I'd be charging while sleeping is lifepo4.
 
Keep everything dry with Lithium Ion. In cold weather i would charge them when warm in the house while you are about. Alternately get a steel box they can sit in when being charged is it contains a fire should it happen. I don't know how frequent they actually do go up but from what I have heard most of the e-bike and e-scooter fires are due to cheap batteries not really suitable for use. If you have decent battery they should be ok here so just do what it says in the manual :)

Loads of ways to overcharge Neil, typically a battery and charger miss match, something that Shouldn't apply to Kev BUT a damaged battery or a faulty charger would do the trick too.
If I couldn't tell if they were lifepo4 then I'd be putting them in a pouch designed for charging as you mentioned. Leaving them charging overnight while I was sleeping upstairs is not worth the risk no matter how small. Just my opinion of course and I may be going OTT 🤔
 
I don't charge anything overnight these days, not even my laptop or phone, the scooter batteries are £350 each so I'd hope good quality, the original Brand is Solax out of China and they sell millions of them this is my 4th so far, and was intended for van use only, but it'll get more use in the next four weeks than in the least two years.

Kev's scooter batterys definitely are not lifepo4. They are Lithium Ion

I have the exact same scooter as you and I remove the battery and fold it manually as I once left it on and it went flat so I couldn’t open it till it was charged
 
Yes, I've done that for winter storage as it lives in the van normally but it sort of defeats the object of buying an electric folding scooter.

My plan now is to make sure I set off tomorrow with a full charge, and this should easily last until the weekend. On Friday, I'll take two batteries and put the fresh one in as we get back to the car, charge the other ready for Monday, and swap them out every two days. I'm pretty sure they would be fine for a full week, maybe more, but as I have a spare, I may as well use it.
 
Its a long time since I used Lithium Ion batterys so cant remember, does cold not drain the battery quicker?
