Internet in van

I’ve been with ID mobile for a few years now. What I like is they include 30GB per month data when in the EU. We pay £10 per month each for unlimited calls and texts, and 100Gb UK data. They also roll over unused data for one month in the UK.

if you look on Martin Lewis’ SIM Finder on his website, you will find even better deals. I’m looking at one for my daughter that gives unlimited calls and texts, 120Gb data and 30Gb roaming data for £10 per month but with a £65 Amazon or Currys gift card for signing up. Not a bad deal at £55 over 12 months after taking off the gift card.

My phone supports dual Sims, so the other thing I’ve done is change over to an eSIM with ID mobile (free of charge) and that will allow me to buy local SIM cards if I need extra data while away in Europe. Last year I used up my 30Gb roaming allowance but then I bought an Orange SIM card while in Spain that gave me an extra 100Gb of data per month throughout the EU for 20 euros per month. There was no contract; I just bought a month at a time.

I'm on the '3' business tarif at £16 unlimited data. Taken out 3 years ago.
I have no idea what the current best is.
(I'm a self employed pensioner using a business name)

I've tried Huawei but adding an external antennas seems to dull it's signal rather than improving it.
I then tried a nighthawk which was brilliant at first (a lot of money though) but after a year started forever going offline and needed rebooting (fine if you're in residence but not if you want to check cameras when out).
I'm now settled with a Connect Lite 4G; I'm using the same antenna I have used on both Huawei and nighthawk previously and it out performs both and at a fraction of the price.

I use a smarty phone SIM card with unlimited data @ £20 month rolling contract and get 10% discount on that as I have a second SIM in my phone.

Works v well at home and roaming abroad.

PS, I use the Poynting 4G mimo antenna.

I paid around £125 for the router and £45 for antenna

In my van I have a Huawei Router purchased for £35 from our local CEX who now give a 5 year warranty with everything they sell! I run it from my 2KW Pure Sine Wave Inverter but with a 12V lead can be used direct on your leisure batteries. I use a Smarty Sim (4G/5G) on the Three Network) which costs £7 and you get 32GB data, Maximum cost for unlimited use is £20 and you pay when you need at the end of the month it stops working till you pay again!

But roaming has very low data limit and high cost for additional data.

12Gb pm limit.
But £7 for a 3 day unlimited add-on should you need it.

Ryoko I delved into it a bit and I think there's naughty goings on be aware folks!

I take mine when I stay in hotels etc, but it also means I can check the batteries on the MH when it’s in storage
You leave it switched on when the van is in storage? I turn my "switched power" off when the van isn't on the road, which powers the router down.
I wouldn't feel happy having the extra power use, though perhaps if the router was on the "always live" circuit I could leave it running.
I don't use storage, so the van is within the home WiFi coverage anyway, but nothing is left switched on, except Bluetooth monitoring.
To connect to that, I have to hold my phone up to a window facing where the van is, so it's not convenient.

We have never bothered, no signal = no problem 99% of the time, if we really need one we drive to one, so not sure why or what we need as a basic minimum.

I have a 4G antenna on a pole on the roof of the motorhome. It was intended for a TV antenna and you can slide it up a couple of feet. If there is almost no signal without it, it gives a good connection. However, if there is no signal without it, it rarely fails to find a signal, but also rarely gets good speeds.
If there is a good signal without it, it isn't used.
4G modem/routers have really clever antennas, which are well matched. External antennas may have higher gain but poor matching and cable losses may be more significant.
Putting the whole device high up in the van usually works best.
Our van has no aluminium on the roof or the back wall, so the router normally lives in a locker high up on the back, where it gets good 4G signal and gives good wi-fi coverage.
