VPN

Before we set off on our trip to France and Spain, I took out a subscription to Nord VPN to make sure I could use BBC Iplayer.
I use the Duck Duck Go browser, with an activated feature which blocks tracking from apps. For some reason this always shows as a VPN at the top of the screen. When I activated the Nord app, I had to deactivate the DDG app tracking blocker.
With Nord activated, I was blocked from BBC iplayer and the uk version of the BBC webpage. I then discovered that with Nord deactivated and the DDG app blocker back on, I could access and use Iplayer in France and Spain.
I then cancelled Nord and got a refund as I was within the trial period. I'm still in France and using Iplayer

Thanks for the input guys. I going to give PIA a try, but I can’t check if it works with the tele when we get abroad. No doubt someon3 will tell me before too long.

You could try it with BBC iPlayer while in the UK. If they spot that you are using a VPN they block you even in the UK because they don't know where you are.

Hi Roger.
I’m in France atm. I’ve got the Nord VPN.
Last night I was going to watch something on BBC Player. Tuned in, and a sign came up, Sorry this programme is only available in the UK.
No problem, I selected the Uk on Nord, and watched the programme no problem. Jobs a goodun 😁

Just loged on to sons ac set up on my phone ,unlimited devices, PC next ..so if know some with surf shark ,ask then if you can long to there's.

I use pia vpn also. Mostly but not always I can get itvx etc abroad, using my firestick. If using Netflix I can put myself in USA and get a different variety of movies etc.

We tend to watch ITV mostly, and BBC takes a step back.
So thanks for that piece of good news.

Hi Roger,

If you want a reliable no bullshit VPN then you should try Windscribe they do a free (no ads etc.) account but you only get 10GB of data/month which is plenty to try it before signing up for the paid account or may even be enough for some people 🤔
They don't save any user data or pay Youtubers to advertise, I've been using them for over 15 years without any problems.

Del

I’ll second that, Windscribe are great, and have a few features that other VPNs do not.

I' ve been trialing Windscribe on this French trip. I'm now out of free data but I've not found it to be 100% effective. It has fooled the Beeb more often than not, but Channel 4 resolutely declined access, so the decision is uncertain for me. That was using Ipad's or iPhones linked to a router with a Reglo sim.

I’ve just tried PIA on my Starlink, and clicked onto BBC iPlayer and then ITV X, and neither spotted the vpn, so I’ll give it a try and see how we get on. Sadly I won’t actually be able to do a real test until March, so fingers crossed!
