Is Wild Camping safe in Spain?

I am off to Spain for a month on 1st April - any tips for wild camping? I am taking the ferry to Santander.

First time abroad or to Spain? Whats your setup? Alone/partner/family/friends? Intended route/s stay/s or destination? If you give more details members may be able to chip in.

You’re unlikely to be alone wherever u go in Spain these days!!!!!
plenty of lovely places to explore including aires and parking places.
Enjoy

best tip for wilding is to download park4night it’s a free app and it really is the most comprehensive listing i have ever used just drag the map to the area you want ask to search the area and it’s all there pictures coords castings size etc will even ling to google maps as a sat nav

Is wildcamping safe in Spain ?

Look at our sister website, WILDCAMPING For MOTORHOMES.

There have been nearly 75,000 members, over the years.
Less than 20,000 are currently active.
A large proportion of them have wild camped in Spain.
It could be inferred that a large proportion of the lost / missing / dead 55,000, never came back....
Would you take the risk?

Or a new TV series? :) I'm sure Meryl Streep could play the entire female half of the MIA, with wigs and her many different accents :Tears_of_Joy_Emoji:

Monica... there are lots of solo travellers here and on Wildcamping with overseas trips under their belts and many of them are women alone (I'm making assumptions here mind). Also, if you're on Facebook, there are solo motorhomer groups whose members exchange info and often meet up to travel together overseas. Oh and definitely join Wildcamping, if you haven't already :)

We travelled to Portugal for 8 weeks this year and spent 3 nights on proper campsites and 5 on a motorhome 'car park with services. The rest of the time we wilded or stayed in approved areas where there were free services. Quite often there were other GB vans and the occasional W....

Spain is similar to France, with an aires system, there is one difference that is that you are parking and not camping, therefore be careful about getting tables and chairs out.
This rule isn't always enforced but you have to be aware of it and judge for yourself whether you feel it is a problem or not.
As said above there are various ways of finding where you can stop, in my experience you are safe as anywhere, just as long as you use common sense.
Also as you are going in the start of the season be aware that the south coast will be getting busy and wild camping may not be as easy as in the winter when most of us go, you may find inland is a better option.

Wild camping around Spain last year was a bit hit and miss for us. Places we had used in the past now have barriers and 'No Motorhome Overnight' parking signs erected. We have used the beaches from Cabo de Gata to Agua Amarga in the past and were very disappointed to find them all closed to us. There are some managed Aires in the area but they were running at about 15-20 euros per night and not in very good spots.
There were a couple of good wild spots on the beach either side of Tarifa but these places seem to be slowly getting few and far between. The Aires book is still a good back-up and there are still some very good free ones about (the wildlife park near Santander is well located and has all amenities). The northern coastline allowed parking but you needed a parking ticket from the machines in order to stay. Inland wasn't a problem and there were plenty of wild spots to stay. We have always felt safe wherever we have parked in Spain and when we have been moved on by the police they have always been very courteous and allowed us to remain overnight.

We've wild camped in Spain. We tend to steer clear of the bigger places and choose the quieter areas. We like the area from Peniscola down to Bolnuevo but we miss out Benidorm, Calpe etc. There are many lovely wild camping spots along this coastline. We've always felt safe.

Yes is the answer.
Plenty of places the WC pois are very good and park4night is a must.
WC by the sea is getting harder and more MH in one place. Spain has a lot of free Aires try inland as well.
Go with your gut instinct park where you feel safe.
Generaly your ok if your just parked no chairs or tables out no step or shoes out no washing out only skylights open and no ramping. The police are more likely to smile and just move you on if your doing this. Parc Natural are different park in the carparks there.
Enjoy ?

Thanks for all the advice. I have just come back from 5 weeks in Spain, mostly on my own and had no trouble wild camping and felt really safe with my 2 dogs. I used Aires paid and free, campsites as well. Park4 night was good and also the Dutch one motorhome Parkings someone recommended to me in Seville. I finally got my head round putting in co-ordinates - one time it took me to a farm about 10 miles south of Seville instead of an aire! Finally found the aire - a lovely Marina outside Seville with a bus stop right outside. I made it into Portugal for the first time to Fuseta - lovely fishing town. one of my favourite places is San Vicentre de Le Barquera near Santander - wild camping in the carpark on the Meron beach where all the surfers come daily. Its right next to an expensive campsite too! I love a bargain! Hope to see you all at Barnham this weekend. May thanks

I've never wild camped in Spain, although I used to spend two months every winter in Benicassim. My late husband was very disabled and we spent a lot of time on the promenade (flat and smooth) with freshly picked Clementine for refreshment and a coffee in the café at the end of the prom. Took the van out for a run every week and did shopping at the hypermarket, so wild camping for us just didn't happen, but I would suspect that as always - common sense and if it don't feel right - move on.

We parked for a night on the seaside in Javea, inadvertently right next to one of the "No Motorhomes" signs. The police drove by several times and completely ignored us. That was early April though, hardly high season.

We mainly wildcamp but our rule is if we don't feel safe then move to somewhere else. Never really had any major problems wildcamping anywhere in the Uk or abroad.

Spain is absolutely fine for wild camping. Don't stop overnight on motorway service areas which are notorious for break ins and don't stop on the coast where there are no camping signs.

Superb free aire next to elephant enclosure of wildlife park just south of Santander.

Hi shonky here, have been to spain many a time with my dog , its hard to keep to a plan if you are traveling as there is so much to see . A lot depends on what time of yeat you go as the heat can be problem ! We booked 5star campsite and after a four hour drive in heat wave with no aircon only to arrive at site with no shelter from the sun and brittish run site (dog freindly ) could not take dog anyware on site .most of the time we found great little camps and great people
.I found it better to do little trips so if you don't like the camp you have time to move on !.(watch the speed traps)
