We visited the local ceramic factory in Briare. It's has a fascinating history. It was run by a philanthropist who ran it along the lines that Quakers did, providing up to date social facilities for his work people. At one time they had ~1500 people working there. It must have been most of the town's population.
They produced (and still do) buttons, mosaic and beads.
Now, for me at least, the fascinating fact. The Maasai people source their brightly coloured beads from this very same corner of France.

Yes, it was pretty drab in September 2003 when we sailed our barge Avontuur over there. Somewhat tricky staying in a straight line when the winds blowing!!!
