Too the side of some threads there’s a a number between two arrows and you can put it up down even put it too minus what’s it for?

Phil knows the full answer, but basically if you think an answer to a question is good you can hit the up arrow and if you think it’s rubbish you can hit the down arrow. When a question is considered answered the answer with the most votes gets awarded the cup, and I think gets some credits.
The arrows are only on question threads.

For questions if it was used properly a reader would be able to find the answer to their problem or the best things to try in order.

Another forum decided to go down the route of electronic moderation using positive, negative and neutral feedback, shown as a coloured bar across each members name.

As you would expect, members with limited IT skills gave negative clicks not understanding what they were doing, and caused consternation amongst members who were simply posting humour.

The result was that members took visible poor feedback personally and stopped contributing.
