Is It Worth Having A Microwave Cooker In Your Moho?

My van came with a microwave .tripped out the site box .the ones fitted to my motorhome has a lower watts than a domestic microwave .

To be fair to microwaves we only started using van at Easter, come winter if I haven’t sized my solar right and need hookup Caz may start using it on hookup. So far I get the impression she doesn’t use it because she can’t (no 240v). That does make me think though we don’t need it, especially since she poo poo’d my idea of stashing apple pies in it and once again it’s an empty locker.

If it gets to the point all other locker get filled it is gone

Last one and only ever used it on hookup to heat milk. All the plastic storage containers lived in it. This one didn’t have one thankfully. Just extra weight.

Our MH didn't have a microwave when we bought it, so we bought a small one. We only use it when we're on EHU, but that's often enough to warrant having it. Jan batch cooks at home and we often take her frozen meals as that both quickly brings the fridge down to temperature and provides us with an easy meal or two. The microwave is great for that, Jan's breakfast porridge, warming milk for my coffee, etc. However, we transfer the microwave to our panel van and leave it in the storage compound if we're not going to be on EHU.

We have one in our Benimar, very rarely used as a microwave, as we don't use hook-ups very often. Comes in handy for keeping the bread in!

I am never on hook up so no m/w only gas,but i have lived out of one at home for 40 years and have cooked just about every thing, i dont have a big oven at home only a table top one for roasting spuds.
Im going to have to get used to cooking the old stone age way with big flames.

Would like to put the opposite view to having a microwave in my motorhome. I have three 110ah batteries which are constantly topped up by a 100w solar panel on the roof. I also have an inverter powerful enough for a 700w microwave. I have just come back from Scotand, mostly wild camping, no mains power as on a site. So saved high site fees. I can take out a supermarket meal out of the van freezer and in 6 minutes have a hot meal. We were in Aviemore getting fuel, popped into Tesco, saw some pies reduced, put them into the microwave and had a cheap exceIlent diner. I use mine a LOT. Yes it was not cheap for the parts but apart from the solar panel which I had fitted I did the rest o the work myself.
I wouldn't be without mine.

We have a microwave and use it a lot when of grid, mostly overnight in out of the way spots and use our generator a to run the microwave and give the batteries a charge if they need it.

if van was larger and had elec....i certainly would have a microwave.....things cook so quickly and easily.......sorted.
i know microwaves are not for everyone tho........i wouldnt be without mine at home..and would love one in the van

Wouldn`t be without one, great for heating up food, loads cheaper than heating up in the oven, we use ours a lot, on hookup and off grid.

Wouldn't be without ours... I do a lot of cooking, but I cannot get everything ready at the same time for the wife and I and the two kids. so easy answer is cook it all, put it aside, when its all ready bung it on the plates and then one minute each in the micro... everyone gets a hot meal. couldn't manage without it although we are usually on sites on EHU... never tried it on my inverter... boiled kettle once on the inverter off grid and it flattened the leisure battery!

As @AndyfromSandy find it brilliant when needing a quick meal , as we always have "standby " ready meals in the freezer. We are lucky to be able to use it on or off EHU :) good for scrambled egg or porridge as well

I've noticed that quite a few members have microwave cookers in their mohos.
I've got one in the kitchen at home but frankly only use it for heating things up (mostly the milk for my coffee!). My particular model is a combination conventional/microwave/grill cooker so I can also use it as a standard cooker for, say, the odd baked potato.
I don't have one in the Moho and wonder if one would be useful or practical?

Colin :):):)
not if you are an enthusiastic Camperstopper, Britstopper or Wild Camper.

I have one and can run it off the inverter but reading all your comments has made me think about how much I actually do use it, and whether it's worth running the cables for the invertor when we swap the van in a couple of month

Best to ask yourself "do I use a microwave at home?". If answer is no or rarely, chances are you wouldn't when away.
Some people love using a microwave and they are really useful. For myself, only rarely to heat/reheat ready-meals and takeaways. I did think about getting a smallish lower power (700-800W) one but asked myself the above question and didn't bother.
I am very tempted by those "Instant Pot" devices though. Seen a small (2L) clone of one on Amazon for under £50 that has good reviews.
