Time to change my MacBook

The LCD backlight started to play up yesterday on my MacBook Pro. Luckily I have 3 years Applecare as the device is nearly two years old. After a visit to Apple there are a few faults on the device that mean that The whole top assembly (screen and cover), the main logic board (including the hard drive) and the bottom section (keyboard, touch bar, touchpad and battery) are going to be replaced. So when it it returned to me only the metal base plate will be part of the original device.

I did break the touch bar which is a £600 repair but they are doing that for £349 as they are already going to be stripping down the system, this includes the keyboard, touch bar, touchpad and battery.

So when it returns it will be boxed up and sold with its remaining 1 years Applecare warranty.

Whilst at the Apple Store I purchased a replacement but I have now gone for the more powerful i9 15 inch MacBook Pro to help with the video rendering that I do. It is heavier and obviously larger, but I hope to be even more productive with this new tool.

Just thought I would share...
 
Must say Phil I am less than impressed with the stuff Apple are putting out now. I loved Caz's MacBook air 13" when she first got it but a bit of tea spilt on it killed it. My older model MacBook pro 13" has been slung all over and almost swimming a few times and still no problems. Our even older white MacBook actually has a squared off corner where it hit concrete so hard but apart from it needing a replacement battery tat is still going strong.

I cannot get on with Macbooks personally (bought one 5 years ago and I hate the thing) and the prices! I am not sure what a Touch Bar is, but that standard repair cost of £600 is over twice what my entire HP 13" Windows Laptop/Tablet cost me to buy

The white macbook we have Dave was new in summer 2010 and still works as it did on day one. That’s one of the reasons I like them but they are too expensive I agree.
 
I have just bought an iPad Pro12.9 with a card from EE to run direct from the system and no more dongle or hotspots to get a connection, I bought it a Bluewater Apple shop on the way to Lincoln, but had to set it up there with a connection and wifi to get the vitals into it. Really good tablet much bigger for me to read and clear pictures. But it did cost though. I got a keayboard there as well but found the same thing is 50 quid cheaper in John Lewis, than from Apple store. I now know why they are the most profitable company in the world.
 
I got the 10” iPad Pro earlier in summer as I found the bigger one just too big and heavy to sit with it on my knee. I already have wireless keyboard from earlier iPad but hardly ever use it but I did get a pencil with this and it’s brilliant. Wasted on me just note taking I suppose though. I always check prices on apple stuff and invariably Curry’s/PC World come in cheapest with next day delivery. I would NEVER purchase from an Apple store, robbing bastards and the customer care if there are any problems with a delivery is so far in a minus it doesn’t exist. Almost turned me to Android last time I had to deal with them for a delivery :(

I was on a city break weekend in Amsterdam quite a few years ago and was staying at the Marriot overlooking one of the main roads into the centre. We saw this queue build up in the afternoon and started to snake around the corner. Went out later on and out of curiosity followed the queue to see how long it was ... Reckon a good mile in total.
Coming back round the front later, it turned out it was a queue for the new Apple store opening the next day.

Couldn't believe all these sheep-like people queing overnight to get fleeced and without a Collie in sight
 
I have a mate who queued for a new iPhone, he only ever did it once though haha. You used to see the same thing when a new console game was being released, folks will do it for all sorts of things. I always prefer to wait a bit for everything to quieten down :)
 
As far as longevity goes, I have a Dell XPS 420 Windows desktop now running 10 which I bought in 2007. Only additions in 11 years are replacement of the original hard drives with ssds.
I replaced my original i pad recently after just 6 years as older models are gradually slowed down and made obselete by Apple.
 
I sympathise about the iPad Bill. Mine's also over 6 years old now and I'm finding there are Apps I can't have because it won't update beyond IOS9. It's still running well but I can sense the beginning of the end, so to speak :cry:

I've also still got (but haven't used for ages) a Dell laptop I bought in 2007. I upgraded it from Vista to Windows 7 ages ago and drag it out from time to time to update a few things and give it a pat. It's a thing of beauty and I can't bear to part with it :) It still runs perfectly but the webcam and bluetooth failed years ago. Add to that a little Samsung NC10 netbook from 2009, also now running Windows 7 beautifully, Martin's 5-year-old 21" iMac and 6-year-old Samsung Tab2 10"... I feel like I'm living in a technology museum! :eek: Mind you, I'm typing this on my 5-month-old gorgeous new little laptop that's compact enough to take on the van, so no complaints here.

I was amazed at how much better my new i pad is than the old one, even though it’s the most basic model. I recently gave my NC10 to my brother, still going on Windows 7. You could put my 48k Spectrum (still works) in your technology museum! Must put some batteries in my PSION organiser and see if it still goes.

I fold... with just a Palm Treo PDA and a Nokia 6610 in my hand - both about 15/16 years old :ROFLMAO:

For the last 3 years I have used and HP stream 14 (14 being the screensize) it has been Ok but with only a 32GB disk and 2GB ram it was slowish and I had to do fresh installs of win10 32bit rather than 64. It was only £180 as a refurb from Laptops Direct.
I quite like Laptops direct but do not recommend either them or indeed any company..We all have our preferences and any company can give a problem. I understand why Macs are popular although suggest that MS surface pro machines are very similar ..They all cost about £1000.
I have just recently bought an ASUS Transformer 12in wide by 8in Detachable keyboard Touchscreen and all the usual bells and whistles also USB3
Again a refurb from Laptops Direct which cost me (only £500) . As you will see it is win10 which I am happy with as I have over 30 years experience of Windows.
The display is excellent quality @ 2880 by 1920. Brilliant for use in MoHo.
Not decrying Macs or Linux but I am very happy with this !

I just bought a iPad 12.9 and it is really a lot better than my 9 inch one. I bought form Apple as they will not sell them through retail only apple shops. I collected it from Bluewater and the place is full of nerds who all know what to do to set them up.. I had taken it to the van in the car-park, but got stuck as the thing needs broadband to set up, so went back in to the shop where it was on mains power and broadband.. soon got fixed up.
I also bought a protector/keyboard form them but after looking up the price at john Lewis it was £40 cheaper at Lewis's !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Apart from that it is really nice to use and is the WiFi and cellular, which also has got a proper GPS chip.. I put the old dongle EE chip in it to get broadband on the move but cannot get it on the continent as the agreement EE signed me up for only allows the phone and not the tablet to be used outside the UK. I was told it allowed both but seems not so I will still have to use the iPhone as a personal hotspot which really slows it all down. I was not pleased when I found out but the answer from EE customer services was Tough luck you signed it for that only.. I wil be leaving EE at the end of the contract in December and might get Virgin ongoing data card for about the same amount.
 
Which on were you after Gway? I can see online okay at Lewis and Cuttys?
