How many of us have never broaken down, in our vans .

How long , with the same van ?
What mileage ?

How reliable are the trucks that our vans are built on ?

Almost tempting providence to answer but I've not needed breakdown on the van as yet, other than on the drive one day when it just wouldn't start. Battery of course  Fingers crossed I never have anything else to report!

I am currently looking to change my insurance because of the 60 days per year limit on European breakdown cover. I would appreciate members suggestions for unlimited breakdown cover.
Thanks,
Satz.

I drove down to Clitheroe from Cumbria one wet January winters day to help a friend move house, when I got in the camper to come home there wasn't even a click when I turned the key. It was dark and cold, and as time was pressing, I panicked so I phoned the RAC. They sent a local garage out to me because they thought it wasn't a big problem and I wouldn't need carried home.

The mechanic knew exactly what the problem was, a corroded positive connection on the starter motor, a bit of emery cloth and a squirt of WD40 did the trick, I was told this is a common problem in the winter with dirty roads salt.
I felt a bit of a clown but had it happened in daylight and had more time I might have eventually realised the problem myself.

We have opened a Nationwide Flex Account Plus. £13 a month unlimited EU breakdown cover on moho up to 8 meters and travel insurance up to 30 days but can be extended at a cost. You have to pay £750 a month in but we just shuffle money between accounts and if you keep a balance of £2,500 you will get £6:08p a month interest bringing the fee down to. £6:92p a month for the breakdown and travel cover.

We are with Safeguard , look round every year, but can't find a better deal that suits our circumstsnces.
They use AA breakdown service , which we found to be excellent when needed.
We will look for insurance quoutes , without breakdown cover, next year. Then consider the Nationwide account.

Summer 2016 was the summer of discontent. Constantly having to rearrange our plans. As well as hab issues, we had DPF filter changed due to a breakdown. Then the van died. Eventually (AA miscommunications to several pick up services and 4.5 hours later) picked up by a low loader, that was too small ... sliders under the rear of the van and hearts in our mouths for us. It took FIAT 16 days to work out the problem. And several £000 for us. Bought a new van just before we left the U.K. in Ocotober, as we had lost faith in the old van. Won’t touch AA now for the van.

Annie I had no idea you could call a nice man out to wash the van... now that's customer service :ROFLMAO:
He was showing me what to use to get that rust off the plastic bumper lol he was so nice.

That "Nationwide Flex account Plus" inc' breakdown and travel ins' sounds like a good deal .
If you don't have a wage going in each month it just means a little bit of effort is needed jiggling money around from another accounts.

We used to use Red Pennant until I realized all I really have to worry about is the mobility of the vehicle. We were insuring per limited trip on the continent and I needed another policy to cover the UK. I then found that I could insure with the RAC for a third of that price, without time restrictions both UK and Europe. When I asked how come they didn't penalise older vans (mine is 18), the guy told me that a lot of the older vans were more reliable than the new ones. They weren't so complicated and it is far more likely they carry the spares. A further advantage is that there is only one policy to worry about for breakdown insurance.
