Hi, we need to set up a wireless network in the lorry that will hand out ip addresses and let things talk to each other. It needs to be able to connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot created by one of our phones, and hand out internet access to devices on the network. As an add on, an aerial to pick up other people's Wi-Fi at a distance would be helpful.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers.

There is a Company called Motorhome WiFi that sell a setup. They use some standard (but good) kit and do a bit of a custom setup as I understand it.

If you are ok with doing the setup yourself, then you could have a look at this thread I did a couple of years ago on Wildcamping using, as I found out later, essentially the same kit as Motorhome WiFi - https://www.wildcamping.co.uk/forums/motorhome-chat/56568-wifi-not-mifi-installation.html

The last time I looked the price was a fair bit lower than I paid as well (which was still considerably cheaper than Motorhome WiFi) and I would consider it good value (It does rely on 240V power as standard but I am going to look at setting it up with DC Power when I get round to it)

I have looked at this stuff before and wondered if it's still the best way. I'll have a look at the thread, thanks mate.

I must admit since the cost of mobile data has dropped significantly and the speeds have gone up, I don't use this kit as much as I expected and often just connect to the MiFi Dongle instead.
(Using a Dongle rather then a phone hotspot does make life easier. I use a Sky Mobile SIM in the MiFi - costs £20/month and provides 10GB, but any data which is unused at the end of the month goes to a shared piggyback which I can use on my £5/Month SIM I have in my phone or the OH on her £10/Month SIM in her phone.
Currently got over 100GB of spare data which on most phone deals would have just been wiped out)

That's very interesting. I was about to order a couple of bits from Amazon to make a 24V POE Injector (the PSU I have is 240V AC in, 24V DC out and what I had read implied must be 24V POE ). I might give this a go first tomorrow and see how it goes :)

PS - got the straps boxed up for you and posting in the afternoon (y)

Cheers that's very kind. Let me know how it goes with the 12v :)

Hi Steve,

Firstly, 3 mobile is offering an unlimited sim (data calls and minutes) that can be used in any device for mobile data. It costs £20 per month on a 12-month contract. Quidco are offering £70 cashback if you click the link through them so you could have it for £14.17 per month. The is an advanced plan so it includes Go Binge and roaming. Unlimited 4G data for £14.17 a month! what more could you want?

Having a good data plan means that using other wifi hotspots is less likely to ever happen.

Good Value!
Is the roaming the full THREE Roaming? (I think they have different levels? not used THREE for years as their coverage where I live was very poor)

I have just signed up to Virgin's 30GB for £16pm but they also have an offer of 120GB for £20pm, good coverage and can be tethered
https://www.virginmedia.com/mobile/sim-only/pay-monthly-sim/?contractDuration=12&tariffID=1674716596

I also use a Motorhome WiFi set up which is OK in the UK using Fon which is great here but now does not work in France or Germany due to changes in the Fon network.

I also have one of these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Solwise-US...1548635710&sr=8-6&keywords=rocket+wifi+router
coupled with a https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00BBU7BNM/ref=pd_luc_rh_crh_rh_cps_03_02_t_img_lh?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
this gives you as much Wifi as the Motorhome Wifi set up without the expense, I use this when I am at my MIL's house because her neighbour has BT which Fon customers can log in to

EE, probably the best network, has a special offer on: 30Gb/month for £10/month 24 month contract - ends in a couple of days, I'm gonna order tomorrow. That works in UK and EU.

i have 25gb on EE for my phone useless when away from built up areas , jan has unlimited data minutes and texts on 3 for £17:50 a month good coverage in rural areas and i have 8gb data on giffgaff gaff in my i pad, total cost £45 a month but i don’t have broadband at home & find these cover most options

Whats the issue with FON in mainland Europe? Ive always used it being a BT customer without problem but we never went over the water last summer. SFR FON in France is / was everywhere and I relied on it heavily.

Not a massive issue now as I get 18gb of data and unlimited calls on my phone with Vodafone for about twelve quid a month and can just use it as a hot spot but SFR FON was always a good option with the iBoost especially if you wanted to stream stuff etc.

For the OP there is an iBoost on Ebay. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/iBOOST-M...h=item3b2957a2d4:g:2mMAAOSwEqVcTGDO:rk:1:pf:0 I have one and its pretty good and of course all runs on 12v.

I run mine of 12v no problem.

£23 a month for totally unlimited 4g with www.three.co.uk

Also they have removed the tethering limit now, so you can use it as a hub for all your stuff.

I use it through a Galaxy S7 edge, all is good:

Laptop
Tablets
Rova Viva
Etc...

I have always used SFR FON in France without any problems because it is everywhere but this time it did not give me the normal login page, instead I was directed to SFR FON and given the option to pay for 1/5 days or a month, this was the same in Germany
I did find this which states it is still possible but I could not get it to work

I decided to get the THREE unlimited via Quidco as Phil described.
Bought this last night and this morning the BT Broadband failed around 9:00 AM! so might end up be used in the house when it arrives instead!
