A polar vortex has now caused a state of emergency to be declared in several US states.

Chicago is experiencing temps of -30c with a wind chill of -45c and North Dakota is experiencing -37c with a wind chill of -54c.

People are being held up at gunpoint in Chicago, not for money, but for warm coats!

That's awful, Phil.
Let's hope they've remembered to drain down their RVs.
And aren't using 'lithium' batteries.
On a positive note, solar panels are more conversion-efficient at lower temperatures.

Been working in northern Transilvania at -25 in shirtsleeves, quite a few years ago though, but it was so dry and the film that we made kind of made us look quite silly. But like many other places, dampness is the problem, here in Glossop I've been in absolute agony when the temp has been normal winterish but extremely damp.
So cold and dry is the way to go and slices of frozen ice creme on frozen bread seems interesting Annie.

So looking forward to being released from the vet and spending our winnings invading Europe and beggar what the brexiters say

Its funny how all the news reports are talking about the so called polar vortex in the USA the main area of the vortex and far colder temperatures are over Canada or so I am led to belive by the weather maps and barley a mention.

Good tip for frozen windscreens or door locks, Fill a zip lock bag with hot water and move about the windscreen or hold over the door lock. Not boiling water though just hot water out of the tap will do

Alf see my post on the weather thread ????

Yes, it's cold. Had to defrost my car this morning and wore my gloves, both for the first time this winter.

Its -6 here in Lanarkshire according to my outside thermometer. No I did not go out to check, the dog does not want a walk in this cold.

It was -9 here this morning...but we can handle it!!

Had to collect wife from Hospital yesterday in Truro. Left 430 for what should be 45min max journey. Got home 9 . Just what you need after 2 major hand ops. Had to cut dry January short by 3hrs ???? Snow and Cornwall just don’t mix?

I have to say though I feel your pain re the wife’s ops I would love to see snow in Cornwall to me it’s as elusive as the Aurora Bolliwshatsit if I’d have known it was going to snow down there I would have been parked up somewhere in my van

You'll just have to do the trick with the boiling water and make your own snow, Annie ;)

Btw, if it makes you feel any better we had a load of snow this morning, but right now it's melting faster than an ice cream in an active volcano :)
