Sudden and temporary loss of power

My 2008 boxer with 2.2 puma engine lost power after slowing in a queue of traffic to 1500 rpm but picked up very slowly then carried on as normal. No dash lights, temp normal, no recent work done.
Later, I changed down to third near the top of a steep hill and this time all power was lost and engine stopped. It started again immediately on turning the key and ran perfectly again for another hour to our destination. Again, no lights or other indicator of a problem.
What's going on? Any ideas or suggestions please

I had a similar on my 2007 Relay (same engine) just died when I pulled into a layby, got back in the van, but it stayed dead, it was the crank sensor, pain of a job to do.

Fuel filter looks ok from the outside, no water warning so 🤞 couldn't begin to look inside on a campsite with no filter tool

Thanks

Thanks all.

Today I decided to continue with our holiday instead of heading home early and we are now in Bettyhill and there was no repeat of the problem today.
I will do a diagnostic when I get home ( if it actually has an OBD port?) And replace all filters and oil anyway.
Meanwhile please all keep your fingers crossed for me...

Thanks again
K ;)

Happen to me, goin up steep hills on a very hot day just after coming out of a traffic jam, but did get a engine light just before limp mode, pulled into car park after crawling 10 miles, had a picnic while cooling down, then cleared the codes, not had a problem since.

I had a car that would go into some sort of limp mode from time to time. The cure was to switch the engine off and restart it.

Normally OK, but on the motorway at night it was a bit alarming: shift into neutral, switch off. Automatic lights go off.
Start engine. Lights come on again, HID headlamps do their start-up bow. ABS warning light comes on.
Shift into D, wait five seconds, ABS light goes out. All good for the rest of the journey.

I had that car several years, but never did find the cause of the problem.

I had an A4 1.9 Tdi that would drop into limp mode, key off and back as you drove, and it'd be fine for days, then do it again. I bought an A6 Tdi, so I sold the A4 to a rozzer, he was very happy with it.

I always suspected that the problem followed starting the engine before glowplug light went out, but I never managed to identify how that would work. Just a foible of that car.

Unless it is actually freezing, I've never waited for the glow plug light to go out, but this particular van is better for it.
