Sudden and temporary loss of power

My 2008 boxer with 2.2 puma engine lost power after slowing in a queue of traffic to 1500 rpm but picked up very slowly then carried on as normal. No dash lights, temp normal, no recent work done.
Later, I changed down to third near the top of a steep hill and this time all power was lost and engine stopped. It started again immediately on turning the key and ran perfectly again for another hour to our destination. Again, no lights or other indicator of a problem.
What's going on? Any ideas or suggestions please

I had a similar on my 2007 Relay (same engine) just died when I pulled into a layby, got back in the van, but it stayed dead, it was the crank sensor, pain of a job to do.

I'm thinking EGR valve blocked perhaps?

I'm on a site in the Summer Isles just north of Ullapool so any diy repairs are out of the question...

unplug the fuel temperature sensor. then try it

Also check the fuel filter

Fuel filter looks ok from the outside, no water warning so couldn't begin to look inside on a campsite with no filter tool
