VPN

Good news is that if you open the Web GUI in Firefox and install the "ZTE-MU5001-HACK" extension it reveals a "secret" menu with the VPN settings, the bad news is that it only supports the PPTP and L2TP protocols which are outdated and not supported by any of the main VPN providers :(
My MU5001 has an Ethernet port so I turned it's Wi-Fi off and connected it to the WAN port of a GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 (Opal) which uses Wireguard and OpenVPN which are both supported by all the main providers and dead easy to set up, the GL.iNet GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX) which has a bit faster Wi-Fi and WAN port speeds but I find the GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 (Opal) fast enough for me and it's cheaper ;)

Kind regards,
Del
Just looked at the SFT200 which is £33 on Amazon at the moment. Daft question but I assume the MU5001 retains the sim for connectivity?

Yes it becomes a modem, make sure your ZTE has the ethernet port to connect to the WAN port.

Unfortunately not, just a WPS facility. ☹️
That's a shame but you could use the GL-SFT1200 in repeater mode and connect to your ZTE wirelessly but it's not as good and you will then have two wireless networks in your van, you could always tell the ZTE not to broadcast it's network but to be honest this is usually used for connecting to public (ie. campsite) Wi-Fi.

Thanks Del. We normally just put a Reglo sim in the ZTE so switching off broadcast isn't necessarily a problem, I take it you mean the overall performance wouldn't be as fast or stable particularly if we have a weak Reglo signal?

No it just wouldn't be as reliable as a hard wired (Ethernet) connection but it would work and like you said it's only £33.00 to try it

I might give it a go, I need to check the home router to see if the WAN port is free. That would be a bonus as I could then use it as you described hard wired especially as it wouldn't be a permanent fix in the van using the repeater/wireless setup.
Apologies Rog for the temporary hijack.
Cheers Dave

You might be able set it up at home as your own VPN server, depends on who your internet provider is and what router you have (y)

Has anyone had any luck using a VPN to get ch4? I had no problems with iPlayer but could not get ch4 to work, using a UK sim in France through a VPN.

If you're using a UK mobile provider (O2, EE etc.) try turning off the VPN and then try CH4

Best way is to set up your own VPN server if you have internet at home, then you'll be using your home IP address which won't be linked to a VPN service provider ;)

Del
Does that require a static IP address at home? I use mobile broadband at home, so the IP address changes frequently.
