3 DATA sim price drop

Does the sim last for 24 months from when you buy it, or from when it is installed, and is there a limit to how long you can hold it before installing it? The reason for this typical oppy stupid question is that I already have one installed with about 6 months to run.
 
The 24 months start when you activate the sim. I have just replaced one that I used the full 24 gb worth and have another two in a drawer for use at unspecified dates in the future as needed.
