Seems like you have 2 alternatives. Either get married:eek: and use the Irish passport, or get a French visa on the basis of education or work. I remember a post here or in WC from someone who did this, detailing how it's done. Then once in France the Schengen area is open to you for the visa period.
Insurance is then mandatory, and GHIC not enough. Look at AXA Schengen Visa Insurance ( axa-schengen.com/en/ ). They don't cover pre-existing conditions, and don't ask about them. It's cheaper than anything else on the market.
