Anyone following The Ashes?

...then this is the thread for you!

I love cricket, it is second only to rugby for me. I have been fortunate to watch some of a previous Ashes in Australia at the Melbourne Test in 2002. An amazing experience and I would dearly love to do the whole tour one day.

Anyway a not unfamiliar start to England's batting today with a paltry 172. We'll have to see how that racks up when the Aussies have batted.

I used to work the turnstiles at Headingley, then retire to the vacant members seats, for the last hour, with pork pie and a pint, out of my wages.
Bliss!

Trying to find a way round BBC's Overseas radio ban.
I believe its on Sports Extra 3.

It's the only thing that I miss, from Blighty.
Apart from people.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, I already use this site but have problems with Radio 5 Live Sport.
I'm toying with YouTube, and even a PVN thingy.

Bit baffled by reception of BBC in Europe.
Listen to radio 4 and radio Scotland a lot when travelling abroad , without any problem .
Only have a problem if live football comes on .
'for rights reasons blah blah'
Yet I didn't have that problem this trip !
No idea why

Normally, they tell me, that if you're on holiday abroad, you should have full access.
Does anyone have any info on this.
Hope so.

My mate always follows the Ashes, he is an undertakers assistant! 😂

Love cricket and rugby my summer and winter sports.
I have been to Perth, Adelaide and Sydney. Great times with the Barmy Army, also went to Jamaica and Trinidad some years ago.
Wherever we camp I always look for the nearest cricket ground. I have a soft for Ramsbottom.
I will be following the exploits of the boys down under but I get the feeling this will be a bumpy ride.

Bum...!
I get my VPN....
England get stuffed before lunch .
So no late night listening for me..
Double bum !!
.

Pudsey Britannia was my local, so was the pub.
Pudsey St Lawrence, where you could watch Ray Illingworth batting and bowling in the nets.
I asked him for his autograph.
While he was signing, I indulged in a little light banter.

He said, " Wi' a gob like thine, ah could be asking' for thy autograph, one day !".

I went to Denton C.C. In the early nineties to watch a benefit match for Kenny Benjamin who was the pro. It was a great day and all the West Indies team turned up to support Kenny.
Part of the entertainment was you could face an over from a West Indies bowler (probably Courtney or Curtley) or bowl an over at a West Indian batsman. This was for £500 a go.
Up steps this plumpish businessman red ball in hand to deliver to Phil Simmons who was a stylish opening batsman and when his timing was right he could dispatch even the best bowlers to all parts of the ground
Anyway sure enough businessman steams in and delivers a medium/slow long hop which Phil smashes high over the boundary into the car park and onto the bonnet of a bright red Bentley. The owner of which was the businessman. Poor guy it cost him £500 plus I am assuming a hefty repair bill.

So here we go again at the Gabba.

After a very early wobble England are actually doing well at lunch on the first day. Still hugely early but we need a start before the twilight comes and the conditions change.

Root gets his first ton in Aus. Psychology this could be not only good for Root but great for England.
The Aussies have taunted Root and the England team this hopefully will be the inspiration England needs, fingers crossed.

Oh yes..
Listened to it live on the new VPN
Fascinating last hour.
Amazing last 10 overs.

Good to hear TMS live again ,with video clips, too.
Looking forward to tomorrow's play.

I'm up again at 5am to catch the action. We need to hold it together until the twilight and lights come on and then we'll see how much of a leveller it is.

I had a busy day, from 8am to 12.
Visitors.!!!
Didn't have chance to sneak away for a quick Shufty.
The Aussies got off to a very good start, the field looked vast and the dropped catches seemed demoralise the visitors.
Thing's could improve on the start, tomorrow ?

I've nothing planned for today, so this morning I'll be watching the cricket until the close.

Mind you, looking at the state we are in now with the Aussies lead, let's hope it's a run-fest from England to get us back in the game!

Slept from 5.30 for an hour .
This will be known as the Mitchell Starc Test.

The Aussies seem to be managing the match so that
England have a bad start, facing the bowling as dusk and the lights arrive.
All this after a full day in the field.
I fear the worst.

177 behind at the end of the Aussie first innings!

Lordy....

I'm an optimistic.
This pair have got to stick.
Rooooot !
