Are we getting lazy.

Always interested in this type of discussion; if in a day I can earn three times what I would pay a good tradesman to do the work I need, why would I spend my own time doing it? I’d lose money and it would be a worse job. I don’t ask unskilled people to do my job, why should I try to do theirs??

I've been down both routes, I've changed wheels myself taking an average 20 mins, (finding the locking wheel nut key can be time consuming).
I've also called the AA to do it for me, taking on average 2 hrs from calling to driving away!
It took 3 hrs for them to get to me out in the countryside on a very busy for them bank holiday monday!
On the other hand, in the kingswood area of Bristol, it took them only 20 mins to pick my car up & take it to a garage when the cam belt broke on my new to me Escort.

I had what I thought was a puncture, turns out to be a crack in the wheel. It took me 3 days to get a wheel .
I have heard of three other similar cases
If I had no spare, I would have been fukced

I had that the other day, never heard of it, but tyre man says it's common, I used the rim of the spare and put a tube in the spare, I'll look for a wheel on Ebay and sort it later maybe.

It is illegal to use tubes in tubeless tyres for many years now, hold your hand out.

We were returning from north Wales yesterday just joining the A500 from the M6 and I noticed our Tyre pal system was showing the drivers front tyre had lost 10psi of pressure, then about a half mile onto the A500 the alarm started at 53psi our spare was no good as on another post it had been stolen.
We had puncture seal fitted 2 years ago at the Peterborough show and it held at 53psi until we got home yesterday and a new tyre has been ordered and I will get the puncture repaired and put on as spare.

John.

Good point
Had a blowout on the M1 "smart" section, no hard shoulder, in a cutting, nowhere to go except up. RAC got there before traffic police, had my spare on in no time. No spare wheel? You have to be joking!
By the way, it's a legal requirement in Spain for all vehicles (including foreigners).

Yesterday I was following a car that got a flat tyre when I stopped and offered help I was told no thanks we just call the breakdown people. Had I changed his wheel he would have been back on the road within 10 minutes not waiting for a tow truck.I grew up when the most important thing in a car was a tool kit and have been known to even change a head gasket on the side of the road. Now I realize you can do very little to modern cars but if you are able bodied why get breakdown just to change a wheel. Is this why insurance premiums are getting so expensive?.
The only time I won't change a tyre is on a motorway otherwise it's the jack n tourque wrench job done !
