Audiobooks

I know some of you will listen to spoken word books either while driving or relaxing. I’m new to this sort of thing so is there any advice you can offer, please? I’m particularly interested in downloadable content to be stored on an iPad so which site do you use, is it worth the cost, accessibility while on your travels etc. I enjoy using Readly for downloading magazines so is there an equivalent for books? Cheers!

I would recommend the App "Audible" I use it on my iphone so presumably it also works on iPad. You need an account with https://www.audible.co.uk where you select your audiobook, that then syncs with your device. Have had many happy hours listening to audiobooks, there are some great ones from people such as Bill Bryson, Alan Bennett just to name two. You canals get complete series go well loved comedies such as Dads Army, Round the Horne and lots more, there is huge choice and you can have sample before you buy. I pay a monthly membership subscription which buys me credits which I can spend on the audiobooks, often 1 credit which costs £8 will pay for a much more expensive audiobook. Give it a try I doubt you will be disappointed.

Audible is far too expensive. Why not join your local library and get your audiobooks for free(as well as ebooks and emagazines).

I’ve not taken to audio books, just not my seen. Lin my wife thinks it’s brill and uses the app Audible.

Travelling away all the time ... will investigate the local library at some time.

However, another fan of audible here. You pay £7.99 for one credit each month to get a book ... books that would normally cost £18. They also offer a book at day for £2-3. Often an offer to buy 3 credits for £18.
My husband was not a fan of audible books, but now we don’t have a journey over 15 mins without one. I have a separate book that I listen to cooking, knitting etc.

I too joined my local library and as i am dyslexic, audio books are free (normally £1 to lend)

I thought £1 was very reasonable but they insisted I take them free.

Once on a hard drive and with a little techie advice, we could always form a little swap club at meets.

Maybe put a little Audio Book log on the campervan window so we know who is in the group or just post here.

I am sure a data transfer would be quick and soon build up a great collection.

Bit of drag when touring in Europe the cost of diesel and ferry to come back would make it too expensive:Smiling_Face_Emoji:

Was going to suggest Kindle, but discovered that Audible is their reader :( :(

Thanks for the input. Using the local library is fine when I can copy CDs but not too practical while traveling hence my question about downloads.
Audible seems the most popular/readily available but I do rather resent giving money to Jeff Bezos.

There's an Apple app called Audiobooks that offers thousands of free books... mostly the same collection of classics that you can get free from anywhere for Kindle and other e-readers. You can also buy books via the app. I haven't tried it but it might be worth investigating.
I do think it's disappointing that Amazon Prime membership doesn't include audiobooks as well as e-books. If they were part of the deal, I'd sign up.

By the way, Ed on Toast ... an audiobook swap club is a great idea

On similar lines you can download podcasts of radio plays/dramas from various sites such as

I use "Audible" it's a monthly cost in which you get a token. you can have any book with your token. If a book costs less than what your token would cost you have the option of paying for it.it's a monthly subscription, so you can cancel whenever you wish. I believe my first book was free.
