We were on a Spanish Motorway in the Mountains heading for France I was doing about 80 kms when BANG rear offside tyre exploded nearly lost control but managed to stop the van 2 very fast lanes on bends and no hard shoulder big trucks on this route any way got my wife out with hi viz me too got the Triangles out ans sited and waved the traffic down from about 70 metres round the bend, tried to call 112 but couldn't hear them for traffic noise so just stood there waving traffic down, about 25 minutes later a Police patrol car turned up it had been going the opposite way and saw what was happening and turned back, the Cop said they could not get a breakdown truck there as it was too dangerous so he asked me to slowly drive forward 500metres where there was an off slip, he stayed behind me with another Police car all lit up and I slowly drove off the Motorway, and would you believe it right there was a tyre shop. Luckily I have a spare wheel and the guys in the Tyre shop fitted the spare wheel for me the rim of the busted wheel was bent to hell and the tyre was just shreds so both were binned The guys in the shop refused any payment at all I cannot believe how lucky we both were 1 no one was hurt and the van did not crash 2 there was a tyre bay right there 3 the Police man spoke very good English and interpreted for me in the garage, so now I need a new wheel and tyre I was also lucky to have a spare wheel on my van no amount of tyre spray would be any help there. There is some damage under the wheel arch but that can wait till we get home in a week or so. I have driven 350 kilometres today and Weare now at Nersac on the Aire. The van ran OK.

Rim looks like it went down a pothole or hit a rock. The bank wakes you up though doesn’t it 😁😁
 
Well after the bang the van was all over the place before I got it under control so the van was running on the rim I think, I had seen a lot of tyre debris in the road for a few miles before my bang so maybe a bit of deris caused the blow out,
 
Well done getting sorted out, any problems over there would do me in as neither of us speak any foreign, a shame you binned the wheel steel ones can be straightened
 
A Big Wakeup call to all M/Home drivers to be careful as you never know when One's going Blow.....Glad to hear that you are all Safe & Well after your ordeal enjoy the rest of your Trip👍👍
 
Wow! Not a pleasant experience.

I’ll be the one to ask though - what age was the tyre and how many miles old?
 
hi . glad you are ok just goes to show a spare tyer is a must you said you was at nersac campercontact 22141 if its this one it was free electric years ago as we was stuck there for 6 days snowed in on our way to Spain .Cheyanne

Even a brilliant blacksmith would struggle to return that buckled steel mess to a usable standard, is there a standard? Steel rim is only fit for the bin.
Trigger, the rubber gods were with on the day.
 
All steel wheels can deform, thats why folk fit alloys, yes no tyre gunk would help, i had one about 2 years back did the same on the rear, lucky im on twins, not so easy to change a 6 nut truck wheel, i have a 5ft torque bar and speed brace along with a flat bar to lift the wheel up on the studs.

Have managed to get a replacement wheel and tyre.
We had a rear tyre go flat very quickly near Interlaken.
Not at all dramatic l
Breakdown vehicle arrived and put pur spare on ok.
The spare was 12 years old so we stayed in a camp whilst a local garage sourced a new pair of tyres.
These were fitted on the front
The old fronts moved to the rear
The good rear becoming the new spare.
Tyres and fitting about £500 in Switzerland
But no major hassle
No way was the damaged tyre repairable
I would also not use a damaged wheel even if allegedly 100%
"Triggers Tale* reminds us of unquantifiable risk &> incidents !
 
well after reading this thread I checked my car tyres so now booked in to have 4 new fitted on Sunday my van are ok just had them replaced when we bought it but our car gets neglected on inspection they had a lot of cracking and the 2 front were fairly worn so sorted 4 new ordered and paid for fitting on Sunday.

You’re ‘avin a laugh. Are you saying you’d trust that rim after it’s had that amount of damage? I think you could well be in a minority of one.
On a lighter note. Glad everything went well after that mishap Trigger.
One day Trig, we could discuss your broom😬

They can do it with Alloy wheels too, so I'd not be too fussed doing it with a steely.

I have repaired a few alloy rims over the years, eventually stopped doing this due blame and claim culture we now live in. An alloy rim with the equivalent damage as the OP steel rim, is beyond repair.
 
I wouldn't repair an alloy wheel either, soft enough to start with, I'd always be worrying about it.
