We do the “duvet sandwich” too

Never realised how many of you do the same until just now…!

Ours has 2 bench seats that can make 2 singles or a massive double, but either way it makes an awkward shape as the “bed(s)” always extend into the cab area with extra base cushions, so fitted sheets and so on were never going to be an option

This problem was one of the reasons for getting a van with a fixed bed. We did use sleeping bags, but it was cheaper to buy new ones rather than get them cleaned. So we went with a feather duvet like we have at home. Toastie warm, but if there is a slight dampness in the air, it can clog together. So we have just bought an all seasons duvet. It is a 4.5 and 13.5 tog that make the 18! The feather one was a 13.5. The good thing about a duvet is it will fit any shape bed.

So I think the "Duvet bed sandwich " as previously metioned by a lot of replies is definitely the way forward- makes perfect sense. Thankyou for everyone's input.

I use silk filled duvets. Bought one for our bed at home then decided to get the same for the van
Best bedding I've ever bought!

They're lightweight, squish down really well for packing away (take up less space than conventional duvets).
Suit all seasons. Warm in winter, cool in summer - no need for separate duvets with different "togs".

I am a Duvalay convert. Used them in all my pvc’s, motorhomes and now a caravan on fixed beds and beds that have to be made up from lounge cushions.
Wouldn’t go back to duvets etc but each to their own.

Speaking for our specific van layout.

1. Does a duvalay fit properly on top of the (slightly irregular) cushion setup when used as bed(s)?

2. We set up our bed(s) in both single bed form and double bed form, depending if we're travelling together or solo.
How many duvalays would be needed to suit both those scenarios, and where would you store them?

3. Our seating happens to be in great condition for its age and is fantastic quality (they used proper, sturdy materials back then).
With just the addition of a duvet on top to lie on they make the most comfortable bed(s) to sleep on.
Plus the bottom duvet(s) can be securely tucked in around the edges and don't move around when you turn over or wriggle about during the night (both single and double bed formats)

4. How easy are they to clean? Do they fit in a (domestic size) washing machine? All my quilts do.

5. I'm with Kev. They seem pricey for what they are

Fact: I can get a better night's sleep in our van - with the simple addition of duvets as "mattress toppers" - than I do on our (pretty damn good quality) mattress at home.

I'm sure the duvalay set up works fine if you are a solo traveller, but the OP is travelling as a couple?
