Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro - insurance

We are planning to tour eastern Europe in 2019. I have done some planning, mainly because the insurance is due for renewal. Getting insurance cover for all the countries is proving to be difficult.

It would be good to go through Bosnia and Herzegovina and / or Montenegro to get to and travel north up the Croatia coast. It would also be good to go to Kosovo, which technically is still part of Serbia - depending on which side you look at it from, but can’t get insurance cover.

There are forum threads from people saying they have had insurance cover but these are old and 'phoning around I can't find any insurance. I would appreciate advice from people who have current insurance cover for these countries.

All EU countries plus Serbia are covered by the insurance and breakdown cover quote from AIB, insurer Markerstudy, apart from Bosnia which would be 3rd party only with a Green Card, breakdown would be covered. Price quoted is £203.31 insurance and £78.55 breakdown. I have asked AIB is they can extend the Bosnia cover to fully comprehensive but they said no.

We renewed again with the caravan and Motorhome club - they do green cards for all those countries. AIB only had one insurer who provided green cards but would not insure a van of our value. Comfort and Saga, I think also offered green cards.

We travelled Croatia and Bosnia with aComfort insurance but still 3 rd party for Bosnia and a green card at the border. Be aware if Brexit is no deal also check your International Driving permits are in order

Cann't offer advice on the trip but I recommend you aim to fill up in Luxembourg and Austria whenever possible, so much cheaper than France.

Have you tried comfort insurance as they cover all except Kosovo on our current policy.

In the end I stuck with AIB, competitive prices for comprehensive insurance and European breakdown and they will issue Green Card for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, which will be 3rd party only. It was getting complicated with other brokers; wanting to know exact dates of travel, charging extra by the week for these countries, needing to be a member of a club - CCC / CMC. In the end I decided life was too short and I had better things to do! If we do a long trip I will have to revisit it. I think we will be less ambitious with the number of countres and travel more slowly - see plan B. The other countries can wait for another time.
