C1 Given Up

The Post pile waiting for us on our return from Kelso included the DVLA Reminder of my Driving Licence expiry. Completed the renewal online without the faff of C1 Medicals etc. I would struggle with a Medical, and I have only had to use the C1 for one period of 3 weeks or so in 2008 driving a 7.5 tonne Merc Lorry for an Exhibition at the NEC ... So now, it's imperative that everything can be fitted in to a 3500Kg Box with a wheel at each corner ...

I don't believe I would have a problem with the medical, but even so I would be minded not to bother with it.
Makes sense to give it up, especially if no plans to ever go bigger (y)

i’ve gone through mine twice now not particularly needing it though if your caught with the vehicle overweight it’s an additional offence driving without the correct license, but sheer bloodymindedness about them taking something away for no good reason much safer driving a 4.25 tonne veh than a 3.5 ton veh with a 750 kg trailer

interesting perspective there not considered :(

Not sure I agree with that. The GOV/DVLA website says the limit on the license relates to the MAM of the vehicle being driven, it makes no mention of the actual weight of the vehicle in use. I think the offence is overloading and possibly driving a dangerous vehicle but I have never read about anyone being prosecuted for not being licensed because a 3500kg vehicle was overloaded. Obviously best to avoid taking the risk of a prosecution.

You might be a bit premature.

The DVSA are well known to miss out various categories when returning renewed licences. Not many people know that they sometimes accidently leave other categories ON ......... some of those categories needing a medical where no medical was submitted.

I have an allowance of 38kg under the 3500kg limit and have used overestimates where I don't have exact weights for individual items. The 38kg leeway is calculated after allowing for the actual weight of driver and passenger [over the assumed 75kg each!], and assuming full water, diesel and gas tanks. I filled up with diesel this morning but have used about 11 litres on the journey; I have used 5 days gas, and have no more than 30 litres of fresh water, so there is a 90kg buffer just on the water, so I ought to be closer to 3400kg than 3500kg

i kept my HGV well after retirement just for the sentimental reason but when it changed to once a year medical i gave it up but had to keep the c1 to drive the cheyenne 840D 5,000KG payload 1216KG. when it was time to change ( had her 10 years ) looked around & the payload for 3.500KG was rubbish so had to go for a bigger payload 543KG & now on my second medical £50 .cheyenne

I got done for being overweight once and there was no licence offence.

I did the same Steve, I wouldn’t currently be able to pass the medical and not sure if the medical would actually be a potential risk or not. Just bad timing as no problem driving as I am if I didn’t need to renew license. Silly thing is after surgery I could take the medical and should have no problem. Such is life, no point worrying, I just downplated as I didn’t want a different van

Went down that same route. If your careful you can get everything in 3500kg. Even used a couple of refillable gas bottles and a lithium battery.
Us too! 2 x 11kg Refillable Gas Bottles and 1 x 120Ah Lithium Battery. I made the vehicle weight part of the Agreement to Buy from the Dealer in April 2021 and I then weighed individual items as they were added to the kit & caboodle. Where I didn't have a definitive weight, or where the weight varied [e.g. clothes, food], I allocated a maximum safe weight allowance, knowing that it would be a 'swings and roundabouts' loss/gain. I'm as close as I would want to be with my computed Payload margin of about 38kg, but I do have the contingency of allocating a full 120kg fresh water tank weight [usually travel with no more than 30 litres], full diesel tank at 90 litres and both Gas Bottles full at some 47kg gross weight.

I believe that our travelling weight sits at somewhere between 3350kg and 3450kg

It was surprising how much weight was in my refillable gas system, (11Kg Gaslow and 6Kg Gasit plus with manual changeover). I took it out and had a gas bank 6kg bottle fitted that was much lighter but still allows me to use outside fill point

I bought Alugas cylinders because the steel Gasit/Gaslow ones were so heavy. These GasBank ones look very light. I haven’t heard of them before but they do look pricey.

I went to Charlie thinking of getting Alugas but think they only had the bigger ones when I went and they were too tight for my gas cupboard. The gas bank cylinders even lighter though so worked better for what I needed to achieve. They aren't cheap (still cheaper than ajugas though lol but super light and still able to use outside filler so no messing around. Only downside I could see was they don't have the crash safe valves built in so gas should be turned off when travelling compared to what I took out.

When we had our Gaslow fitted in July 2021 at Thirsk, Charlie had no Alugas cylinders in stock, so we had no choice but to take the heavier bottles. 'Gaslow or Gaslow?' 'I'll have the Gaslow, please' ...
