And they pay

The United States federal excise tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel fuel. Proceeds from the tax partly support the Highway Trust Fund. The federal tax was last raised October 1, 1993 and is not indexed to inflation, which increased 93% from 1993 until 2022.

no wonder the V8 is still king

But how much is health care, Kev? Neither you nor I could afford to live in US with our respective medical needs/cost of meds/consultations etc ...

Steve

How much of our fuel tax money goes to health care though?

There are no earmarked UK taxes AFAIK, Kev. Taxes flow into general taxation revenues and this income, plus UK Government borrowing, pays for the services. We all tend to grumble about Public Services, especially the NHS and Social Care, but the former is always there in an emergency; of course, that means that the queue for non-urgent care gets longer ...

when you do the sums (remembering that a US gallon is smaller than a UK Gallon to get the values right), and look at the MPGs they get (I have seen people quoting down to 6MPG), it is not that much different per mile to the UK in fact when it comes to RV running costs.
quite a few of them don't have V8s anyway ... they have V10s!

Also the mileage driven is huge compared to UK because of the size of the Country we were staying with friends once in Tulsa Oklahoma and at 6pm one evening we set off to go to the American Legion for evening entertainment, we seemed to be driving forever and I asked where this place was, just down the road aways was the answer, yeah it was 125. Miles just down the road aways and then we had to drive back, very common that in Okky it seemed. Loved it though.

I had an uncle who drove 200 miles after working all day to go to a night job in canada.

Gene Pitney sang a song about your journey, but changed the wwords to '24 hours from Tulsa' for dramatic effect and ease of phrasing ...

Albeit 18/19 years ago we roamed across the Rockies in Canada in a 3.2ltr v6 Dodge caravan SUV (well that was its name) and I kept a record of fuel used, costs and mileage and the nett effect compared to us achieving 32mpg and we were well pleased, especially as we were 4 people.
