Cracked tyres in the tread.

Our car is now 5 years old. It’s done about 7.500 miles since new.

It came with Bridgestone tyres and it looks like it could fail the next mot.

There are cracks on all the tyres .just at the bottom of the tread .
The tyres are as new condition and worth nothing now.

I have just spoken to a tyre fitter and he said it’s lack of use…

Anyway advised me to fit cheap tyres as it will happen again through lack of use.
So ordered 4 new tyres today
The same size and speed rating to be fitted next week. I was going to go for a more expensive tyre hopping they would last longer..

One would have thought Bridgestone would have lasted a bit.

So lack of use knackers your tyres…

But the spare is in perfect condition..

Thought lack of use caused cracks in side walls not the tread? Send an email to Bridgestone with pics and see what they come back with if only 5 years old.
Nothin on the side walls at all.

It’s hardly worth the bother the time it takes to find whom to sent it to and then awaiting a response and possibly ping ponging for some time to me it’s not worth the time.

Well not for me anyway. I have so much to do but that’s very very low on the todo list.
So just sticking on a cheap set of tyres at £300 solves it.

Just will not get Bridgestone again. They were fitted when the car went out of the factory..

Most likely not what others would be . But for me yes leave it and move on.

Cracks aren't usually an mot fail unless the cords are visible ....

All sorts of things can cause tyre cracking
Heat/cold/sunlight ....but most common is lack of use ...the rubber used is a natural product and needs 'exercising' to keep the polymer like chains flexible ...
The tyre carcass is thinnest between the treads so a rather weak point ...

I had this happen a couple of years back on the motorhome ...
There were no visible signs of damage to the tyre or any cracking before it happened and the moho had only just passed it's MOT .

And trust me ANY signs of cracking and the tyres would've been replaced ...
And after this ....I replaced ALL the tyres .

We hadn't long descended the Trawsfndd road down into Bala (lots of twisty bends ) that could've easily ended up with us on our side .

Thanks it now seems to me it was the right thing to do .

I can’t imagine the tyre blowing out like that on the motorway.
And who’s to say I stay at the speed limit.

Blowouts aren’t always bad. So far I have only ever has 2, one in a Saab at 90 on the M1, just thought I had a wheel bearing problem and coasted to the hard shoulder. Second was on A14 in van at 70, real big bang and just stopped as soon as I could without excess braking.

Both times vehicle was under control and both times no damage. I know it’s is probably unusual and/or I am lucky lol

I had a spring break and in a nano second I was off the motorway and in a field.
The spring broke and the bottom part of the spring twisted over the spring bottom seat and the sharp end went right into the tire wall and shredded the tyre. That was at over 70 …
Knocked out 4 top front teeth apart from that I was ok

Citroen berlingoes used to do that ....
so much so citroen fitted plastic shroud at the bottom of front springs on later vehicles .

Continentals used to do it but they paid for the new tyres, see what bridestone say

Well, quite.
Generally speaking, being a tyre fitter is a hard, dirty and not well paid job.
Being a tyre design technologist is rather more attractive as a career.
Tyres are quite complex and their design involves quite a few compromises.
Generally, exposure to UV light damages tyres, not a lack of use.
Some models of tyre rate longevity and uv resistance as a less important than tread wear, wet grip, noise, rolling resistance or one of the many other factors

Don’t think these would have been affected by uv light it is parked in a garage most of the time since new.
However it is what it is so I have new ones going on in a few days time .
The new ones are cheap and nasty but the same ratting both speed and sizes ..

As I posted in the link earlier, seems the lack of use is a problem with Bridgestones.

If you do under 12.000 miles a year they say cheaper to use a taxi or public transport, change the tyres and drive the thing, if not there is a twenty here looking a good home. 😂

We have done 7.500 since new in 2019.

A taxi no thanks apart for having to wait for them they will not carry the dogs to the vets.
And as for price. No it’s cheaper to run the car .

Tax free. Insurance. £ 206. Just renewed it. Breakdown cover £ 36. Mot. Not expecting any problems. £ 39.
Fuel full all the time after each use. Just in case we need it .

In the late seventies I worked part time at a Yamaha main dealer,
We sold crates full of the new RD250/350LC, couldn’t get enough of them

At the time they came shod with a new iirc brand of tyre called Bridgestone.

Many had a very distinctive colour variation in the tread, some even had a red band all the way around the tyres were terrifying, zero wet grip, made from some form of recycled or man made rubber apparently. We were doing quite a lot of accident repairs for a while until the cause became ant bit more obvious!

Many dealer principles started replacing them with proper tyres and initially had a bit of a bun fight with the uk importer for a while until the press started reporting the accidents

No doubt Bridgestone have improved massively since then but I always avoided them myself.

My KIA soul EV had some horrid green energy saving brand on it from new, zero grip from those in bad weather as well but at least there’s a wheel on each corner, that tends to keep us upright if one breaks traction!
