Damned laptop has died

I mentioned somewhere that my Samsung Tab A had died too so I order a new 10 inch tablet which was half the price of a used Tab A, I found out why when it arrived yesterday, total junk, I had to RTFM to get anything out of it, so it's going back via Evri next time I go out in the car.

I'm not in a rush so I'll wait for a Tab A to come up at a sensible price, the PC I bought above is around the same price which is stupid.

End of the day it doesn’t matter what OS you use if it works for you, I used a few and there were advantages to all of them. I found Linux very useful for servers used for monitoring, MS server used to be pricey at one point. Linux was also good for hacking and i still have some of the tools I bought when still working.

I did look at transferring everyone in the company on to Linux desktops and Google software purely for cost saving that was needed at the time. Company owner put his foot down though and while it would have done the job as well as MS products the learning curve and resistance to change was what killed it.

At home if interested have a fable about if you want, commercial can be different depending what the company does.

Regarding security, Windows can be hardened very well if you want to spend a little time learning.

@Pudsey Bear have you checked out Music Magpie, CEX and the like for what you are after?

Linux desk tops have moved on so much in the last 5 years, take about 10 mins to show how it works with updates and cleaning history & cookies.litr drsktop.jpg

The tablet was running Android but they had really messed about with it, I'm not interested in figuring out another OS version I'll wait for a Samsung Tab A, yes I've looked on most if not all the outlets recently Neil.

Security for windows seems to be fine just running Windows defender as I don't use the laptop for anything monitory.

Trev it can take a competent user years to learn Office applications. The problem wasn’t logging on and getting a desktop. It works both ways though, a company that has used Unix or Linux for years would have the same problem going to MS or other.

It may be me not paying attention but I noticed another company recently that does refurb tech, is it Back Market? Stuff will come up if you don’t mind waiting though 👍

But it still cannot do a simple job as posting a link to a website can it.

Not all i7’s are the same Kev, it may be a lower power consumption mobile processor rather than a hot running power hungrier full power job.

You may find it’s quicker doing some things than others. You may also be able to speed it up by turning off the power saving stuff 👍

Yes it was set to optimise the battery, but I usually run plugged in so I've optimised performance.

I also think my mouse is getting a bit old and feeble, I know how it feels, so I'll put a couple of new AAs in and check it out.

I'm soooo glad to have my illuminated keyboard back though, Not sure how much I'll use the touch screen but it does work.

Not bad for the money really.

Just getting rid of edge and installing Google, then all my other Gubbins, wish I'd done a screenshot of the old one though :( :(

Install brave or vivaldi and forget your googlies.

I've re-installed Brave, and imported my bookmarks from Google, but I only use it for YouTube the rest is pant in my humble opinion.

Only takes a few mins you lazy bear, i get no adds and always back to home page, plus switch of the crap, once you start using it proper it will be good, promise.
Anyway you have loads of time on your hands, liz told me this LOL.

You are very good at missing the point Trev, I am not as paranoid as you my dear friend, Google doesn't bother me, it a brilliant bit of software and it connects all my devices seamlessly & if they want to spy on a 73 year old that's fine.

One of the reasons I have stayed with Dell is I think they only make business machines so are much more robust, also they are still supporting this laptop, I'm just downloading up to date drivers for it, sadly :) :) it isn't compatible with Win 11, which is odd as Liz has the same model and it came with Win 11 installed, it's awful.
