Data only sim

Does anyone know if you can use a phone SIM in a mifi ( huawei 5577) as I thought it would not work? Can't remember where I read it though but think it was that the provider recognised the device and blocked it if not a phone?

I have the same 5577 and use a giffgaff sim, no problems.
