Dealer valuations and exchanges.

We have decided to change our Elddis Aspire 240 for another van. The 2013 model seems to be selling for around £40,000. Has anyone any idea what valuation I should expect from a dealer if uplifting to a van in the 50k region? I know the cash buying companies are a joke. I tried one just to see and they offered around 29k cash. I suppose some people desperate to sell may go for it but 12k under value? No way. Your recent experiences with part exchanging would be interesting so I am pre armed with what to expect as a reasonable offer.

No idea on trade in but tried to sell ours privately without any luck and inundated with clowns phoning up offering 15/20k less one in particular stating i cant ask for a price similar to a dealers price, told him to go to a dealer then his reply was yours has a better spec.
We sold using motorhome depot ( they will come in their hoards oh no not motorhome depot ) personal opinion they were great, set a price I was happy with had a viewing within a few days guy was genuinely interested but his mother died a day later and postponed purchasing. Four days later another viewing and sold. I would have no hesitation in using them again. Neil had a good sense on who was genuinely interested and fished out tyre kickers. We purchased our new motorhome privately 10k under what dealers were looking for the same year and model.

I used to belong to a Forum that had a large Dealer as a corporate Member [and he did buy/sell Vans on behalf of Members, all of whom rated him very highly]. In April 21, he reckoned that his Dealership needed a mark up of £8k on a Sale to stay in business, and he gave a detailed breakdown of where the costs went. I can't remember much detail, but the Service/PDI and the 'let the Dealer sort it out [exhaust!]' took up the thick end of £2k. Interest Rates have risen in the interim, and the Cost of Living Crisis may yet slow the market down, but the Dealer equation would suggest £32k or thereabouts as a starting point

Thanks for that. You say you bought for 10k under a dealers price, but what was your selling price like? Was that around what a dealer would offer you or did you get more than from a dealer?

The price I got was 2k under what dealers were selling for but that's a price I negotiated with the motorhome depot guy, I was not interested in what he sold it for, I set the minimum price I would be willing to part with it for . My theory was that buyers feel more secure / confident buying from a company, the other bonus is that they have an agreement with a finance Co and can offer finance to the prospective buyer.

Thanks Scotia. I have registered with them and now waiting for their contact to inspect.

Have in mind what you want and let them give you a quote, may the haggling commence. Good luck.🤞

The trade up price given by a dealer is probably made up of 2 elements. The price they think your exchange is worth to them plus the discount they would give for a cash deal on the new one. If the trade in is one they would show on their own forecourt is likely to be a better price than if they were selling into the trade for display elsewhere.

Before covid a dealer would expect to make at least £8k on a privately bought in motorhome around £30k plus. They would soon go bust if they didn't as most have huge overheads.
I'm not sticking up for them , I know a director of a large firm. He says £12k on a part exchange deal would be ok... 6 each. This was on a £60k van.
Some firms are crooks so take care. Some want a 10k to 15k profit on each vehicle. A mates job is picking up Van's after the deal is done and is there at the negotiating. (I best say no more)
I have not seen him for 2 years due to not being in one place long enough.

Think you sum it up perfectly, we want to sell at dealers prices and buy way below . Play the market right and , as you proved , it can be done .
Motorhome depot seems a sensible way to sell . Unfortunately I gave up after making 3 appointments. 3 no shows

I couldn't have been more happy with Neil, he was from Carlisle as far as I made out they purchase a franchise so bad show if they did not turn up.
We had no intention in buying straight away but something came up on the doorstep privately which suited us, planted the guide price seed in Christina's head and sent her in to negotiate. I'm glad she is on my side sometimes. 😂

So your offer from we buy any tat of £29k should tell you they will have it on their forecourt for £39 to £41k ish the same day.
Split the difference and you have your sale price.... private or to a dealer.. 36 ish
Just my guess .....
Put mine for sale at £41 back in the spring (chausson suite relax) got offered £38k. Sold then not sold as money not forthcoming....changed our minds and kept it as it does not leak and is ultra reliable. We could not see the £40k extra for the carthago malibu we liked.
Maybe next year when we get back from Norway.

We got 40k in exchange for our bailey 2015 740 45k Miles .not bad as used it for 30 months put 25k Miles on it .we paid 41k for it ..
Dealers had it up for £42750 and it now sold ..we tried to sell private but had no luck.
We only got offered 38k privately. Best deal was the dealer px.

Scotia, I'm confused. I had a guy from Motorhome Depot phone me to confirm some details and he then stated the broker would contact me. Today I received an email asking us to take the vehicle to STJ Motorhhomes in Reading to be put on their forecourt. Is this how it worked for you? I was expecting someone to visit us at home to inspect the vehicle first. I was also unsure if it would be placed on a forecourt or if it would be inspected by potential buyers at our home address. They have stated the selling price would be 38k to 42k and they would take 3k following a sale.

The way it happened with ours was the chap came out took extensive pictures them put it live on Motorhome depot first and then onto Autotrader think they use gumtree and fleabay as well. I was able to use the motorhome upto the sale was made. As I said before I think each has their own franchise under the motorhome depot banner. Sam

a lot of forecourt vehicles are in fact private vehs agents such as motorhome depot place there for the dealers a cut of the sale and turnover looks good

If your in the Southwest. I know a good motorhome & caravan broker. A very nice chap if I do say so myself.

My Rapido 2004 110,00 on the clock 2 dealers offered £13,00 and £14,00 I sold it privately for £19,00 I paid £21,00 6/7 years ago so I was a happy bunny

Some folks in our village used the motorhome depot to sell theirs. The MH was kept at their home on their drive and we live in the middle of no where. It sold quite quickly ans they were very happy with the service and price.
