Deep Cycle battery testing

I have bit the bullet and ordered an Ah battery tester for lead-acid batteries. This is not a CCA (cold cranking amp) tester that is used in car shops. The unit is calibrated and has an accuracy of better than 10%. It can test batteries up to 200Ah C20 rating.

This was not cheap and even with a good discount has cost around £250.

I want to test the batteries that Wildebus is buying from me and I also have a couple on Banner batteries that I want to test before selling them.

The great news for members is that I will have this with me at rallies and I may be able to test batteries that they suspect are knackered.

The unit simulates a 20-hour discharge (C20) and gives the actual capacity of the battery (+-10%). It is calibrated and proven to accurate.

Do batteries need recharging after the test Phil?

No, but they do need to be charged before the test otherwise it will only show the remaining Ah.

The test only takes a few seconds (Voodoo Magic) and it displays the available Ah of the battery.
Sounds pretty cool.
If the battery is not fully charged but you have a Monitor that tells you what the calculated SOC is (so say a BMV telling you 90% SOC for example for a 100Ah Battery), will this tester still give useful info e.g. if it reports 90Ah Capacity but you "know" (from the BMV) you have used 10%, that is still a pretty good indication of a 100Ah battery that still has full capacity when charged? Does that make sense?

Just thinking if you happen to have the tester with you at Camp Quirky, I can maybe check the batteries that I am taking OUT in order to fit the ones I am putting IN from you (as I am selling those on - first two reserved at the end of May :) - and would be great to be 100% sure on the state of them ).
But not sure what the SOC of those batteries will be at the weekend (depends on the weather and solar of course!)
