dog coat?

I'm lucky with my dog, although he dosen't like me putting his coat on him, he accepts it, and i get it on him so that it fits comfortably. I think it also helps that I only walk him on a harness, which, when he has his coat on, I loosen it up a bit so that it's not too tight. This morning he definitely needed it as it was snowing on this mornings walk and it was flippin freezing.

Thanks Annie

i will try all the suggestions you have mentioned, i can't get near her to put the neckerchief around her neck even if you offer a treat, so goes under furniture and you cant get her out, if she see anything she goes away and if you get her first she acts as thou you are making her do things she doesn't what too, please will yo show me on Derby when he his next with you

Thank you

How about wrapping some favourite treats inside the coat and leaving it for her to sniff out and investigate. If she begins to associate the coat with nice stuff, at least she might stop running away when she sees it.

Hi Debs

A dog behaviorist has been in touch today i have been referred by one of the members so i got in touch regarding my problem, they have come back with that her response is a FEAR response and I have to teach hear about handling bit by bit
i changed over the last few days from the dag coat because it was waterproof and it made noisy to a dog jumper which I leave on the armchair in the front room where she looks out of the window and watches the world go bye, she just ignores it has thou it isn't there (GOOD SIGNS)

This afternoon I stood with her looking out of the window and funnily threw the coat over her, she just got hold of it with no fear and started running around with it so I would chase her, fingers crossed I might be getting somewhere in this long process.

Thanks for coming back see you soon

Hi.
Mad also have a rescue dog - fortunately fewer issues than yours. But my dog friend guru sent me this link. https://www.brilliantfamilydog.com/
a couple of the books / manuals are free to download .... AND THEY WORK!

Hi

The dog behaviorists got in touch via email today and says the problem regarding the coat and towel was down to touching and that the response was a FEAR and shutdown response

I have to teach her to accept handing, bit by bit very slowly, maybe a small touch per day, when i think about it she now as started climbing up on my knee but i haven't to touch her or shes off, she did used to bit us if we went to stroke her over her head.

Thank you very much

It is a long slow process it was with Derby but gentle perseverance is the key .

So pleased. We contacted a dog behaviourist as Oscar jumps up at me when excited and after I’ve been out of sight for a second. Jumping was not exactly safe when on my bike either! He was also still mouthing! We are doing a lot of boundary work and the improvements are really astounding. I can now put my shoes on and he stays in his bed. The big win for us is halving his breakfast and giving him rewards during play or during impulse control. So worth the effort with training. Easier than children!!!

Hi Lorraine, hope you and Jeff are well. Try making a her a small jumper, put it under her bed to get her smells on it. Charlie runs the other way from her coat, think she hates the noise of Velcro. Once it's on she's okay. Hope you sort it out soon.

Hi did they come out to see you, they emailed me and said it was FEAR response all down to touching, I have got her (ROXY) out of biting me when we go to stroke her over her head, but if she decides to jump up on my knee (not a lap dog) she lays their, but if i go to stroke her she's off, so it's more than logic what she is saying (BEVERLEY) she lives in MALVERN, LEEDS ans she is prepared to call, I will try for a few months, now i know what it is before I take any action

Thanks for your comments

A friend put me onto brilliant dogs, even though she attends training sessions with Devon Dogs. Apparently they sing off the same hymn sheet. So I’ve been following the free books advice from
brilliant dogs. But we did pay for an hour telephone consultation with Devon Dogs. It was £40, but she was able to be specific to our issues and constraints - we are full timing. It is amazing how quickly Oscar picks up new ideas. We are having to work on removing some routines. For instance, we put on boots and coats as if to go out, but then sit down or do something else. I scatter food on the floor as a destressing / over excited antidote. He stays in his bed whilst I put on shoes and we prep his dinner. Much better cycling and in his doggy trailer. Hardly ever mouths me now. Play is varied. Walking to heel works after he has done his toilet. Writing this, I am amazed at the progress we’ve made in the last 3 months. He is 4 years old ... you can teach an (old) dog new tricks!

When you get to the point of being able to put a coat your pet you maybe interested in the coats that are sold by company called Equafleece, saw some on a couple of dogs in the park today and the dogs were in and out of water without the fleecy coat getting soaked.

Hi its funny that you mention this because I too say the Equafleece on a dog and i thought this was ideal no velcro (No noise) so i had a look on line and i am definitely having one of those when i get her accepting me getting a jumper on
Thank you Lorraine

Id love one

not that he gets cold

but walking in the rain and returning a wet dog to the van

weve tried several but they just don’t fit

i want one that wraps underneath him , because that’s where he throws up mud

but he’s 8 stone and they just don’t fit

I watched Room 101 last night, Dog Coats was one of the item up for discussion, apart from a few breeds it was considered that most dogs arrive with sufficient fur to survive the weather we get in Europe, I don't recall if it got binned or not.

Hi

I to agree that dogs shouldn't have a jacket/coat/jumper they never had those things when I was younger and it was colder then at winter

But after reading different topic's on line they should be provided for little dogs especially single coated with the bellies near the ground, because like everything else in this world they have been bread over the years with less stamina against cold weather

My dog ROXY has a body a body mass of 3.1 kg and shivers after about 25 minutes outside in the cold, so i'am going to aft to give in on the jacket situation
