Don’t panic!

I wasn’t going to put this out there, as we are now getting over this mornings early event that hit us, and in reflection, I think it is prudent to let forum members know of situation in the early hours of this morning, and to have additional door security.

We passed Nice enroute to Grasse, near Cannes a long motorway tailback, three lanes stacked up, and as we were approaching a motorway service aire, we pulled in. A large aire, we headed to the camping car area at Mougins aire. We were the only ones there with a camper. We viewed the logjam still happening on the MW. We decided to stop for the night, which is something we have done often while touring, tired, pull in and sleep with no hassles, until this morning!!!

As normal before hitting the straw, I applied the additional hab door security, this is our only access to camper interior.

Around 01.30hrs, Bea screams out, there is someone trying to access through our only door (our dog was as good as a chocolate fireguard) and slept through the event.

I got up and switched on external light, nothing to see. My mega led torch through closed window, nothing to see.

I sat for a while, could see nor hear nothing, returned to bed.

Back 02.00hrs, knocking on the camper door, dog barking ( he works when he wants to ) I got up and shouted who is it, reply in English, police, looking through small kitchen window, and outside light still on, I could see the lady officer hand on her pistol, enough credentials for me.

Someone, maybe a nearby parked up trucker saw what was going on and report attempt breaking to police, hence their appearance, which was good. Bea explained her reaction on hearing activity at our door, police stated her scream sent them away, and of course police turning up would help if the perps were still around?

Police stated such crime is rife down the south of France, camping cars, cars, people’s houses. The officers also offered for us to drive and park at their station, further down the motorway, we decided to stay, and had no further issues, nor much sleep.

Anyway, and apologies in advance if the following sounds like telling my grandad how to suck eggs!

If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, irrelevant if you are as tall as Lee 🫢 a black Dan in karate, stay in your camper, your safe zone, do not go outside, you do not know how many people are involved trying to access your camper.

In our case the police arrived, I could see they were both in uniform, I still asked for ID before opening our door. To sun up, don’t panic, stay calm. If you have to drive away, try and flatten the perp/s.

Would we stay overnight on a motorway aire again? Yes, this morning was unfortunate, wrong place at the wrong time, no one hurt, apart from a door lock. Although a new Risk Assessment will be drawn up.

Stay safe 👍

Edit: lock is knackered due to the perp trying to pick the lock.

Sounds awful Terry, but very glad you and your good lady are safe and sound, I didn't know about this when I saw the door lock thread, that seems to be sorted at least.

Trev, we were at the designated area for MH’s and Caravans, the trucks appeared as their designated area was rammed, partly due to the motorway three lane congestion, some moved on as the traffic eased, others stopped for the night.

TBH, I try to avoid the large fuel dispensing Aires, but as mentioned, three lane traffic crawling along in 30+C heat, we pulled in and I had had enough driving for the day.

Due to previous owner effective diy only door internal added security, if the perps managed to pick the lock, they would not easily gain access, or certainly buy me time to get my head around what was going on at an early hour.

I now keep MH keys next to me and if ever a repeat situation arises, or feel threatened, I’ll activated the Signa alarm panic button.

“Unsettling “ yes it is, I do reflect back and ask myself, what could have happened within a confined space if access was gained?

Food for thought when we return home?

Thank you for posting, we hope to go to France in September for a month so will think about security options
Yes, have a good think for additional door security. As mentioned, I have one door only, which the previous owner added a simple but effective diy addition. If you have a double floor, pm me for details.

Enjoy your month long trip to France. 👍

One extra option with a dual role ....
Always good to have a fire extinguisher in the motorhome. Keep a little extra one handy where you sleep for any fires and maybe could be a useful thing to spray at an intruder? Would help keep a distance between you and them as well.

All good positive input. I actually have a dry powder extinguisher secured with Terry clips right next to my door. A factor I did not give thought to. My LED light, blind them, then bash their brain in 🫢 with same torch, is my line of thought.

But being realistic, and on reflection, keeping potential intruders out for as long as possible is key. This buys one time to try to get their act together to implement the next step?

We were lucky, B was not sleeping too well due to mozzie bites, her screaming scares the 💩 out of me, no wonder they fecked off rapid!!!

A similar thing happened to us a few years back on an autoroute aire. They messed up both cab door locks and when we got to Spain the Renault agent would not sell us just the 2, we had to buy a complete set.
It's rare we use autoroutes now, and would never overnight on them. It is so easy to pull off and park in a village instead.

it is one of these things where if you do had "something" to defend yourself with, it is best that it has an alternative genuine purpose so it is not a deliberate weapon being kept should it ever come to 'that' discussion :( And also something that cannot be turned against you. That would be a concern of mine.

Oddly enough, I have a length of 70mm Copper Cable sitting in the house left over from some work and I sure would not want to be whacked with that! Forget Colonel Mustard in the Library with the Lead Piping - more like Unwanted Scrotes with Purple Plums in the Motorhome with the Copper Cable :D

Not good, currently I would not rule out using autoroute Aires, modifications will be applied, though.

The same old story, 💩 happens, wrong place at the wrong time, unfortunately ☹️

This type of thread pops up occasionally and usually gets the same macho responses about atttacking intruders with various items and reinforcing doors etc.. In my opinion, if anyone considers the threat great enough to need these measures why park there?

We recently spent 3 weeks touring France and every night we slept with both cab windows open about 3 or 4 inches. This kept a good flow of fresh air in the van and stopped condensation. We stayed in villages, beside lakes and rivers and I never once felt in any sort of danger and the reason was because of where we parked.

Re-read my first eight words of my OP. I should not have bothered.

Incidentally, this would have been before CV19. Autumn bear Strasbourg. Retired Brit couple parked for the night at a small village Aire, they were both murdered, stabbed to death, from reports (we watched the details on French tv at home) no sign of a break in, police theory was, they opened the door to the perp/s.

As I stated, I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, as you were when your locks were done. And the retired couple in the sleepy village aire, paid the ultimate price.

At the time this happened, I posted a link to the murder detail and google map of the aire.

One of the first pieces of advice I received when I mentioned a possible trip to France was, 'Don't overnight on them.

I would extend to "don't overnight in France" :)
I try to get through France as quickly as possible when I have driven to Spain or Italy ;)
