copied from the what did you do to your van thread
(mine passed its MOT yesterday new ball joint needed but all done now having a look at the rams on my drop down bed today thought it best to have them along even if not fitted prompted by a discussion on another site that said they should be good for 10/15 years or 1000 repetitions excuse me only had mine 5 years but 6 months of each year away in it i’m over 1000 uses now & it does seem a bit more bouncy when up than it used to be will probably get slightly stronger ones as it’s a clean & jerk job to lift it at the moment)
as above by the time i’d gotten access to the struts i decided to renew them anyway reading several horror stories and struggles on you tube etc i researched all i could it turned out to be a case of preparation preventing perspiration job took ten minutes for first ram & only 5 for second , but as part of the strip out found a couple of other faults that would have probably saved me the job in the first place , firstly the bed in my hymer has always hung below the window line behind the blackout curtains there are two plastic plates that obviously were fitted incorrectly the hooks being outside the bedframe rather than over it this meant that instead of sliding inside the cantilever arms they went outside the arms & acted as a fork preventing full retraction , part of my reasearch was reading a quote of peter hambleton a guru off hymers he said the nuts on the cantilever system should be checked annually as part of the habitation check mine had never been done apart from the fixing brackets there are 16 nuts & bolts as part of the cantilever one had a single thread holding the arm, two more finger tight & a further 4 tightened one or two full turns these in themselves would probably take out the bounce from the system instead of a clean & jerk to raise it i presently have to put my body weight on it to keep it down once ive returned the matress i’m sure it’s going to be much easier than previously
