Not strictly an Electrical problem I know...

My Avtex W164RD TV works fine on TV but with DVD's I have a problem. I can play movies and kids stuff no problem but if I put in a Game of Thrones DVD it loads up ok, I get the copywrite warning and the HBO titles run but then the screen just goes black. I can get settings etc to appear but not the program menu.
I thought maybe it was a parental setting but it's set to "Adult" z which I am ;)
The DVD is region 2 and the settings are PAL so what can it be?
Don't want to be stuck with reruns of Downton Abbey or Disney cartoons 😕

K ;)

Have you tried Avtex technical support? They're usually very good.

Not yet, but if these forums don't come up with an answer I will do, thanks

have you used this DVD before on a different TV? DVDs can be printed with faults.

I just went to what I think is the DVD setup page on my Avtex TV to see if there is a region selection option (in case it may have been set to a different region) ... Never used this page before and it is like a throwback to 1990s PCs! few options and the font is so blocky. I dounbt if there are any important or relevant options to select there :)

Thanks for looking ;)

I have used the DVD's on other players with no problems.

I noticed that for some reason series 7 of GOT is a 15 where the others ( that don't work on the Avtex) are 18, so tried one of the set and it worked as it should. So, it looks like it's something to do with parental control but the Avtex is set to "ADULT" ???
I have contacted Avtex, so let's hear what they say...

not really got many DVDs with me to try out. I'll try out a selection on my Avtex (an L249DRS-PRO) in the next couple of days and see if I get same thing.
BTW, where is the option to set the viewing restriction to "adult" or whatever? don't think I have seen that? PIN number somewhere?

Its in the DVD settings, general settings, scroll to bottom and set a password if its not still set to default. The setting above the password setting is the parental and there's a list with Adult at the bottom. Interestingly the manual shows a further "default" setting which my TV does not have.
I wonder if resetting the TV to "default settings" which is another setting outside of the parental setting, would work 🤔

We had a avtec ,could not get it to play copy dvds rips ,
And would not play half the films on my out side storage memory thingy,, sold picked up cello cheapo ,

I think our menus are a little different?
I found the kind of options you are referring to by hitting the "settings" button which is also on the DVD direct select button.
That brings up some general TV settings like aspect ratios, and if I press the right arrow on the central arrow set, I see some other options which look pretty well DVD exclusive, though menu not labelled as such.

The parental guidence on mine is set to 8 on the 1 to 8 list of options, 8 being ADULT (and 1 is "KID SAF"). I took out a bunch of DVDs between U and 18 to try with different settings and I found it would play the "18" rated ones without any problem (which I would have expected as set to ADULT, and of course what you would have expected in your case as well).
I was going to change the settings to check they actually did something but I couldn't change the guidence level as it did not accept the password stated in the user guide (0000). Couldn't reset it either as need the current password to change.

I tried the 'Default Settings' reset as well, and that did change some settings like subtitle menus and OSD display back to ENG, but it didn't reset the password (at least not to 0000).

End of the day, my TV does play discs that at least are labelled as "18" but I seemingly have no way of changing the restriction even if I wanted to! Don't recall seeing that menu before since I got the TV 4 years ago and don't think I would have bothered changing the parental password even if I had, so not sure what is going on there?

Looking at a manual online again, there may be a higher level of parental guidence control which superceedes the one in the DVD menu? could be just a different menu set for a different model, but I'll have a look a bit later, as there should be a way to set the password on mine! Don't really need to but I like to know the answer :)

Well again thanks for trying...
Looks like I'm stuck with Downton Abbey if the weather turns poor and we have no TV reception:rolleyes: I do have some Father Ted though and that's always good for a laugh.

The DVDs I tried are not very mainstream, so it is possible while the cover is marked "18", the DVD itself is not flagged? I tried a couple of 18s but for example, one was one of the kind of DVDs you used to get with the Sunday papers (remember around 20 years ago, every Sunday, every paper gave DVD movies away?).

I'll have to try out some rips, etc like the Tupcoxs are referring to and see if my Avtex is any different? I know thinking back, when you made a DVD, some players would play what you copied, but with others you had to 'finalise' the disc for it to work.
(not looked at this kind of thing for donkeys years, so relying on memory for what was 'meant' to happen :D )

There used to be a hidden menu that you accessed with a coded number, and this used to unlock all the restrictions, I can't remember what it was but I am sure someone will come along with it soon

Just remembered, press the Source button on the remote control there press 2580 that takes you into the hidden menu, there you can change different settings
Edit,,,,, I have just tried it on my avtex and it doesn't work work with the latest tvs, must have been the earlier version that you could change the settings

Found the secret menu via Source 2580 but there was nothing on there of relevance to the problem
K 😞
